Towards V7...

Post by GanonZD »

So, with V6 finally released, and AAO now being open-source, it is up to the community to plan the next version of AAO. So what is realistic for AAO V7? The following list is based on what I have seen the greatest demand for on this forum:

Game mechanics:
  • AAI-style investigations. This will be the most tricky thing to do, and there is no guarantee it is possible. A part of this will be to implement vertical scrolling.
  • AAI Logic.
  • Perceiving.
  • Logic chess.
  • AAI deduction.
  • Sprite fade-in and fade-out.
  • Music fade-in and fade-out. Furthermore, it could be nice to be able to change volume with a similar fade-effect; this allows us to make the music silent only to resume it again later.
  • Fade effect between different backgrounds.
  • Colour flashes.
  • Black-and-white and negative colours (the latter for use with psyche-locks).
  • Custom text sounds, perhaps even with speed regulations, like in the canon games.
  • Back-out conversations for psyche-locks.
  • Checkmark or Locked icons for talk conversations (preferably customizable)
Things to consider:
  • AA5 Mood Matrix.
  • AA5 Thought Route.
  • Custom interfaces.
  • Support for (approved) user modules.
  • Keyboard shortcuts.
  • Moving the text field (so that it appears, e.g., on the top of the screen instead of the bottom, which sometimes happens in the real games)
  • Broad investigation areas, with a button to go back and forth smoothly.
  • More advanced expression engine.
Editor features:
  • Faster editing. This includes making the hover menu more useful, or doing something completely different. I myself suggested a new paradigm. I invite people to come with more ideas.
  • Separation of actions from frames; the actions will then appear as interframe elements. This is a more natural and flexible approach to actions. Unas suggested that himself somewhere on the forum, even if I cannot remember exactly where.
  • Allow the author to divide the storyboard into scenes, collections of frames where the positions and backgrounds of the individual characters are remembered and automatically reloaded when that character reappears.
  • Autosave.
Manager features:
  • Add trial descriptions, rankings etc. in the "Games" section.
  • Allow people to edit their trials without making the changes public; so there is a public and a private version.

Other possible goals:
Implement as many PyWright features as possible so that AAO can compete, and so that some of the PyWright works can be converted to AAO if the authors choose to.

Any more I should add to this list?

I think that is tautologically impossible. For whenever we add AAI-style gameplay, this will be an update so major that we shall have to change the version number to V7 anyway. May I also suggest the term iAAO -- investigations in AAO.

This entire forum has tons of great ideas for implementation in v6.1 or v7.

Yes, but I tried to list the most commonly requested and most realistic ones. In my personal, controversial opinion, these are the ones we should aim at including as the main new features in V7.

Speaking of AAI-style gameplay, we should get started discussing how this should be implemented, and how the interface should work.

Wanna take over the thread? :-P

Also, there is the AA5 Mood Matrix and that other AA5 brainstorming mechanics that does not have a name AFAIK. Whether they are realistic I don't really know.

:objection: You can prove nothing! (Except if you look at the post history. But you would never do that! :-D )

That has been added along with some other stuff.

:gotcha:
Anyway, I don't know if anyone else has suggested it, but internal fades from one background to the next so you don't have to make them yourself?
