Sprite Correction Task Force

Post by Meph »

Sprite Correction Task Force
I've decided to set up initiative to: correct all of the broken or missing sprites for all of the available characters in the AAO sprite repository and add all of the missing backgrounds.. Anyone can help with the task force's work; there's no need to sign up.

Before we can begin collecting the fixed character sprites, we need to figure out which ones are broken. I need help to compile a list of all of the sprites:
  • where the start-up, speaking and still sprites don't match somehow,
  • where the start-up sprite is missing,
  • where an additional sprite is missing
  • and where the sprite's animation is wrong or buggy.
If you've seen a sprite that fits the above, please state the character and the sprite's number and post it here. You can find this information when selecting a sprite in the Script tab in the Trial Editor. You can also find them directly, in the sprite repositories for start-up sprites, speaking sprites and still sprites (names are in French).

Once we've gathered all of the sprites and backgrounds, I'll put them in the correct directories in a ZIP file and send them to Unas.

The project is in five phases:
  • Phase 1: Fix buggy sprites
  • Phase 2: Fix start-up sprites and add missing poses
  • Phase 3: Add new characters
  • Phase 4: Add new evidence
  • Phase 5: Add new backgrounds

Whoo, where to start. I'll post a few for now, but I'll update this post regularly.

In General
Start-up sprites that are made entire poses - Maybe it's just me, but these never show up properly. (i.e. it just skips to the last frame.) Examples: Trucy-12, Brushel-11.
Sprites that have too-small widths - Basically, sprites that have the width shorter than 256 px. This causes them to move slightly while on-screen, and move around like crazy during a [#s] effect. Glaring example: Trucy-5.

Apollo
3 - Same timer issue as 4.
4 - As was stated in an earlier topic, the start-up has a very long pause before the actual animation.

Trucy
2/3 - Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think 3 should be combined into 2 as its Idle Animation.
7/8 - Seems like they're both the exact same pose.
19/20 - Same deal as 2 and 3; should be combined...?

Klavier
17 - A third of the sprite is cut off.

Brushel
• 6/7 - Should be combined.

Thanks Meph for taking that initiative ;-)

Thursday, thanks for contributing :-)
One thing, though : we know that some sprites are not the right size, and we know that many startup sprites are not handled : what we need to know is which ones exactly.
So posting a few examples is fine, but what'll be even more helpful is if, whenever you find a sprite that doesn't work as expected, you report it here ;-)

Meph, you might want to have a look at that old post : http://aceattorney.sparklin.org/forum/v ... 515#p80515
The still sprites have been fixed since then, I think, but not all startup animations.

All of the young klavier sprites :\
That's a given.

speaking of which, we ALSO don't have Apollo head shake/"no" animation. Just the yes.
(Or is it the other way around? O.o)

And we need to seperate Middle aged payne from young payne's mugshot.

Maybe it's just me, but Officer Mike Meekins' sprite number 7 doesn't seem to play correctly (the choking gif). It just loads his 6th sprite (the "sad" sprite).

Adding new sprites is out of the scope of this initiative. :)

Confirmed. I'll add that. :)

Also, welcome to the community! :D

Ema Skye from Apollo Justice
  • No.6 - No talking surprised sprite, it just plays the start up of it.
Klavier Gavin
  • No.3 - Needs to be removed
  • No.4 - Combine it with No.2 with 2 as a start up action.
  • No.5 - No talking objection sprite, it just plays the start up of it.
  • No.12 - Damaged sprite is too big.
  • No.14 - No start up sprite of him flicking his hair. (if that's how to say it right)
  • No sprite of him raising his fist in anger, seen in Turnabout Succession I think.
Apollo Justice
  • No.7 - Damage action is too fast.
  • No.12 - combine with No.11 as a start up action.
Phoenix Wright from Apollo Justice
  • No.9 - No talking ojbection sprite.
  • No.11 - Needs talking sprite?
Lamiroir
  • No.5 - No surprised start up sprite.
  • No.6 - Needs to be combined with No.5?
  • No sprites with her broach.
And why is there a Jack Richford in the editor?
Like the creator of Final Fantasy, I'm better at telling a story.

@Unas
Okay, I understand :)
I'm mostly concerned about my first point, because I wasn't sure whether it was just me. (My PC's been a bit buggy lately.)

@Godot Mango
We only have Polly's headshake. Actually, Apollo-3 also has a timer issue.

@OrangeLightning
Klavier-14's idle animation is the hair flick, which is how it was used in-game, I think.

You'll have to ask Unas about that. :)

Well it's already been explained before... Jack Richford was the fantranslated name of Doug Swallow, before T&T was localized. I believe the 3-1 specific characters were added in before it was localized as well, so that was the name he was originally added in as, and it was just never taken out, apparently.

That's because there isn't one for that pose. I know it's weird, but I noticed this in my last playthrough of PW:AA. When he's in that pose, everytime he talks, he goes to Sprite 2, then goes right back to Sprite 1. So it's like 1 is the still animation and 2 is the talking animation. I don't know why this is, but he didn't get a talking animation for that pose until he was 'updated' in JFA...
