Setting:
Pearl Fey ~ Ace Attorney takes place in Japanifornia Elementary School not long after the events of Trials and Tribulations. Pearl Fey has decided she wished to be sent to attend the 3rd grade here, with much support from the members of the Wright and Co. Law Office and of the Fey clan. Her intent is to learn about the world beyond Khurain during long stagnancies in the Wright and Co. Law Office's workhaul, and as a fun means to relax from the stressful case at Hazakura Temple.

However, during her stress-relief time at the Japnifornia Elementary School, Pearl finds that drama materializes in grade school just as murders do elsewhere: convoluted and melodramatic. In order to quell the "he-said-she-said"s and the pointing of fingers, Pearl founded the first Japanifornian Elementary School Court with the intent of solving these Wright-sized cases born of kiddie drama.
Spoiler : Case 1 ~ Turnabout Heroine: :
Defense Attorney: Pearl Fey
Prosecutor: Fantine Payne
Victim: Clarka Kentwood (and the Seekers of Hope)
Defendant: Lexi Litha

Clarka Kentwood is the only present victim of Turnabout Heroine, with the others -- the Seekers of Hope -- stuck atop the roof of the school, a supposed "impossible location" for anyone who could've done it. She was hesitant to allow Pearl to act as Lexi Litha's defense attorney. She instead intended to personally confront Lexi Litha, whom Clarka accused of the crime, declaring her a member of the "Federation of Despair", a fictional super-villain group standing opposite to the lawyer-themed super-hero group Clarka fancied herself part of. Clarka eventually conceded to wait until after the trial.

The crime was the "kidnapping of the Seekers of Hope", or rather... the larcening of Clarka Kentwood's Seeker of Hope action figures and their placement upon the top of the school, overlooking the entire playground, clad totally in babydoll garments. Clarka concedes that she's been a victim of bullying due to her boyish nature, but it only got worse when she was caught with the Seekers of Truth. She claims that the ringleader of the bullying is Lexi Litha, "convoy of the Federation of Despair", and that she has used her "mighty powers of mind-control to turn the Court of the World against her and the Seekers of Hope."

Spoiler : Characters -- Clarka Kentwood :
Clarka Kentwood is the victim of Turnabout Heroine and assistant to Pearl throughout Pearl Fey ~ Ace Attorney, and is a 9 year old 3rd grader and peer to Pearl. Clarka Kentwood is a zealous fan of the recent brand of lawyer-themed superheroes, the Seekers of Hope. Clarka Kentwood firmly believes herself a member of the Seekers of Hope, named Lady Truth. She is notably smug and confident in her demeanor, often tossing around lingo common for the characters in the The Seekers of Hope comics, a notable mixture of super-hero and lawyer quips. She and Vandal form a duality that play on cliches present in superhero v supervillain conflicts, but also tropes present heavily in Ace Attorney's lawyer v prosecutor conflicts.

Name: "Clarka" is a feminine corruption of "Clark". "Kentwood" is a corruption of the surname "Kent." Clark Kent is the secret identity of DC superhero "Superman," fitting with Clarka's belief that she is, herself, a superhero.

Spoiler : Characters -- Johann Waterson :
Johann is a Hall Monitor and protege to Shamus Flatfoot, one of the two characters occupying the role of "detective", and is a 10 year old 4th grader. Johann is intelligent, crafty and hard-working, showing him to be an excellent student, and he was well respected among the student and teacher body, this being why he was chosen to succeed Shamus as Hall Monitor. Furthermore, Johann is kind-hearted and accepting, defending Clarka from Lexi Litha's bullying and the others who followed Lexi in kind, even though it meant harassment also being directed at him, causing him to lose respect from most other students. Despite his willingness to defend Clarka, Johann is generally unassertive and meek, not often speaking up when he feels as if something or someone is unfair towards him, and he usually accepts the bullying people direct at him without complaint and without tattling. However, as of working under Shamus, Johann gets a burst of self-confidence allowing him to now apprehend rule-breakers when need be, though he still refrains from doing anything about the personal attacks on his character.

Name: Johann Waterson is a corruption of John Watson, which references him working under Shamus as Watson does for Sherlock Holmes.

Spoiler : Characters -- Shamus Flatfoot :
Shamus Flatfoot is a Hall Monitor, being one of the two characters occupying the role of "detective", and is an 11 year old 5th grader. Shamus Flatfoot is, in his role, self-important and subtly condescending. He willingly adopts the persona of Golden Age detectives such as Sherlock Holmes, always with a peppermint pipe in his mouth, and going so far as to reference aforementioned detectives in the form of misquotes riddled with malapropisms and mondegreens.

Name: Shamus Flatfoot follows a naming trend set by detective Dick Gumshoe from the official Ace Attorney games in that his given and surnames are both synonymous with "detective."

Spoiler : Characters -- Lexi Litha :
Lexi Litha is the defendant of Turnabout Heroine, 11 year old 5th grader and daughter of the Japanifornia Elementary School's principal, resulting in her becoming the self-proclaimed "princess of Japanifornia Elementary", using her relation to push others around. Lexi presents herself in a manner of regal grace, which is offset by her taking on the demeanor of a demanding, discontented aristocrat. Pompous and proud, she holds a disposition of constant superiority. She most notably targets Clarka, being the ringleader behind everyone's discrete bullying of Clarka.

However, despite all of this, Lexi is immensely forgetful, even in regards to her royal demands: she would sometimes forget that she never made a request of anyone, getting upset when nobody carries out whatever task she didn't actually say to be carried out, other times she'll forget that she demanded something of someone, getting upset when someone does something for her or brings her something she doesn't remember requesting, or she'll forget the exact details of what she requested, getting upset when someone does what she asked for, misremembering the specifics of her request, thinking they carried out her directions incorrectly. This forgetfulness extends to her school life as well, causing her to sometimes slip into an uncharacteristic panic wherein she acts irrationally to alleviate whatever problem she's facing.

Name: Lexi Litha is an unsubtle, feminine corruption of "Lex Luthor", parodying her antagonistic nature towards Clarka, whose name parodies Superman's secret identity, Clark Kent. This plays off of Lex Luthor being one of the most iconic enemies of Superman.

Spoiler : Characters -- Hugh Toole :
Hugh Toole is a 23 year old educator at the Japanifornia Elementary School and honorary judge who presides over all of Pearl's trials. Thanks to the likes of Phoenix Wright, recently lawyers have started to be held in high regard, and as a result the Japanifornia School District has started providing classes dealing in the Japanifornian law system, of which Hugh Toole is the teacher, making him the perfect candidate to act as judge.

Despite his young age, the melodramatic ensemble of bizarre youth of the Japanifornia Elementary School who deal with their drama by means of overly convoluted schemes and plots have left him with balding, graying hair and a passive acceptance of the oblivion constantly breaking loose about him. He has become an absolute tool to his job and his boss and rarely speaks out in his own defense thanks to his newfound resignment to the daily grind that is his educational career. However in trials, while his boss, the principal's decisions dictate he be show bias to the prosecution once his daughter becomes involved with the process, Hugh Toole finds it in himself to speak in the defense's favor when elicited by the circumstance, not only because of his suppressed passion for the legal system but also because he believes if this School Court can finally put an end to the complex revenge schemes and mysteries born of simple bullying, his job will finally prove to yet again be enjoyable to him and he knows that this can only be accomplished by finding the absolute truth.

Name: Hugh Toole is a play on "huge tool", which he has become to his boss and job.

Spoiler : Characters--Fantine Payne :
Fantine Payne is exclusively the prosecutor of Turnabout Heroine, and is an 11 year old 5th grader, peer to Shamus. She is the awkward, self-conscious granddaughter of Winston Payne, who attempts to mask her insecurities by emulating the demeanor of her proud prosecutor grandfather -- with much notable deliberation.

Name: Fantine Payne is a corruption of "faint in pain", following the trend of the Payne family's names reading as phrases related to reactions to physical distress.

Spoiler : Characters--Vandal Fisk :
Vandal Fisk is the primary prosecutor of Pearl Fey ~ Ace Attorney, taking Fantine Payne's place post-Turnabout Heroine.
Vandal Fisk claims himself a "harbinger of despair" for the Japanifornian Elementary School Court, sent under orders by the Federation of Despair to oppose Pearl and Clarka. Vandal Fisk, similarly to Clarka Kentwood, is melodramatic in his demeanor, but he's also comically evil. He plays on comic book supervillain cliches as well as tropes heavily present in corrupt prosecutors in the Ace Attorney series. He and Clarka form a duality that play on cliches present in superhero v supervillain conflicts, but also tropes present heavily in Ace Attorney's lawyer v prosecutor conflicts.

Name: Vandal Fisk is a combination of the first name of DC villain Vandal Savage and the surname of Marvel villain Kingpin, who's real name is Wilson Grant Fisk.

Spoiler : Case 3 ~ Diabolic Turnabout :
Defense Attorney: Pearl Fey
Defense's Aide: Clarka Kentwood
Prosecutor: Vandal Fisk
Prosecutor's Aide: Lexi Litha
Victim(s): Various
Defendant: Percy Faux

Percy Faux is known as a freak due to his obsession with the occult and supernatural, as well as his tendency to attempt to "curse" his peers. However, when various members of the student body have been victims of what seems like unnatural happenstance, the realization that these "accidents" happened in accordance with the curses Percy had placed on them caused the school to fall into a state of panic. Overcome with terror at Percy's now-proven supernatural abilities, the student body newly christened Percy a "witch", and he is brought up in the Japanifornian Elementary School Court, being charged for his hexes.

Spoiler : Characters -- Percy Faux :
Percy Faux is a self-proclaimed hexer, and a 9 year old 4th grader. He demonstrates not only an extreme love for the paranormal and occult, but an earnest acceptance of the actuality of such supernatural phenomena exhibited by his belief that he possesses mystical abilities with which he can inflict curses upon others. He uses a "curse tablet" to evoke the will of the spirits to carry out misdeeds in his name -- though, he admits, without access to a proper stone tablet he settles for his tablet computer. He is creative and mischievous, able to concoct a wide variety of spells to cast on his fellow classmates.

Name: Percy Faux is a corruption of "Persephone", the name of one of the 4 Greek deities curse tablets are most often addressed to. "Faux" is also a reference to the obvious falsehood of his curses and supernatural abilities.

Spoiler : Characters -- Mikoto Uzume :
Mikoto Uzume is an 11-year old 5th grade girl working to inherit the responsibility of caretaker and miko of the Shinto shrine her family has looked over for generations. Attempting to show her maturity and dignity, she always holds herself high with constant grace and her impeccable posture. She is a graceful and diligent, yet kind-hearted and selfless individual. She holds herself with constant grace and elegance, but she lacks control over her emotions. In lieu of firm control over her emotions, she attempts to mask her expressions by covering her face with ironically-fitting oriental masks. She is sociable and accommodating, and though she is far from judgmental, she seems quick to attempt to "dispel dark spirits", most of which at the school she claims is centered on Percy Faux.

However, despite her attempts to emulate a dignified, stoic demeanor, her sense of humor is broad and boundless and she has the hardest time hiding it. Without thinking she'll often interject puns or one-liner jokes into conversations and attempt to deny having done so, despite her inability to stifle her smirks and giggles and, she can sometimes find herself uncontrollably bursting into fits of laughter when something particularly funny is said, which she reacts to with much embarrassment and donning a kitsune mask. She is also prone to startling people for fun, though she often lies that she "simply didn't mean to sneak up on you so."

Name: Mikoto, when written with a single Kanji character, "命", is "life". Yet in a weird paradoxical sense, Mikoto is also part of the name of a Shinto deity known as Ninigi-no-Mikoto who was sent to pacify Japan when in great unrest. When this paradoxical meaning is taken into consideration alongisde her surname, Uzume, which is a part of the name of the goddess of revelry in the Shinto faith (Ame-no-Uzume), it can taken to mean as her being one who suppresses her revelry and lively nature.

Mikoto, in a sense, can also be corrupted as "miko too", which refers to her desire to be a Miko (shrine maiden) just like the other female members of her family.

Spoiler : Via Brezza/Sopra Terra :
Via Brezza and Sopra Terra are both supposed victims of Percy Faux's curses. Despite neither being biologically related nor the same age, the two, Via especially, are adamant that they are twins separated at birth. They dress and style their hair similarly hoping that it would telegraph to others that they are, in fact, twins. The two have been childhood friends since even before they started attending the Japanifornian Elementary School, and the idea that they are twins is one that has been maintained throughout the years since one of their first meetings.

Via Brezza is the taller of the two and is a 9 year old 3rd grader. She's more exuberant and energetic than Sopra, oftentimes being the source of random tangents in conversation of which she will ramble on about continuously. Of the two, Via is the most insistent that they're related, and has even concocted a complex theory explaining how they could possibly be twins. She's somewhat gullible,
which is most notably shown in her constant allusions to various conspiracy theories, the supernatural or the otherwordly. She admits she doesn't really understand any of it, but that given how much she's read of it there's no way someone could have just made it up.

Sopra Terra is the shorter of the two and is a 10 year old 4th grader. She's more down-to-earth and matter-of-fact than Via,
but she oftentimes entertains Via's ramblings and tangential derailment of conversations out of compassion alone. Unlike Via, Sopra less often insists upon the two's relation, usually only agreeing to it when Via is the one to bring the idea into conversation. Sopra often jokes about how dull a person she is, noting that she really admires Via and how engaging a person she can be, even if her personality can be somewhat overbearing.

Their "curse" is based on the idea that "the two of them would be attached by the hip if they could be" in that they're now stuck together and can't separate from one another.

Names: Via Brezza and Sopra Terra translate to "through air" and "on earth" respectively. "Through air" is a reference to flight,
alluding to Via Brezza's free-spirited nature; "through air" also alludes to how airy Via can be. "On earth" is a reference to how Sopra is down-to-earth and grounded as opposed to her lively companion. A theme of "similar yet opposite" {binary opposition}
was chosen when it came to naming the two, and has been maintained throughout the whole of their character and design.
