"I present to you the world's first virtual-reality trial!"

Phoenix, Maya, and Edgeworth awake in a courtroom that seems normal at first, but is in fact one located within a virtual reality created by an individual known only as the Game Master, who insists that this will be a 'history-making experiment'. Now the trio must play along with his scheme and complete the trial he has laid out while working together to figure out who the Game Master is, why he's conducting this experiment, and just how they wound up in this situation at all.

Created for the "Shelter in Place" competition. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get as much progress complete on it as I would've liked by the deadline. However, I was able to get enough done to showcase the main plot and some gameplay. It was honestly more of a demo rather than a 'Part 1'.

Well, the "Shelter in Place" competition has officially ended, meaning I can now continue working on this case! Stay tuned for more news and screenshots going forward!

I've been spending the weekend getting back to work on this case, and I'm certainly pretty happy with where it's going so far. No estimated release date yet, but it hopefully shouldn't take too much longer. After all, I've got a much bigger case to work on for the current case competition :pearlhappy:

For now, here's a new screenshot that I feel sums up Phoenix perfectly:

Surprise! The case is completed and ready for playing! As planned, it's a relatively short case, taking about an hour or two to complete. Still, I hope you all enjoy it! Feel free to give feedback!

Hey! You actually completed a case on here! I guess my little jab at you during the BE awards ceremony is outdated. Just like an autopsy report.

Here's my SoC:
Spoiler : :
Waking up with a headache. How many times has this been done before?

GREEN TEXT! OH NO!

And Edgeworth is there too? It's a match made in heaven!

The Game Master. Interesting title.

A VR trial? Capcom has really upped the quality of Ace Attorney games, haven't they?

Oh, Edgeworth. Just wait until Spirit of Justice comes around.

PFFFFFT! Okay, that was hilarious.

Also, with this VR stuff, I'm half expecting Monika from DDLC to show up. In which case, I...wouldn't accuse you of stealing my idea since my own case with Monika came after this was first conceived.

Who cares about stuff like this? It's only Japanifornia! People never get punished for things like perjury here!

This kinda reminds me of that old Blackrune case where Apollo is put inside a virtual reality case.

Hi, toast! I'm Phoenix!

Let's see...the odds of rolling snake eyes are one in thirty six. Thirty six cubed...that would mean the odds of rolling snake eyes three times in a row are 46,656 to 1. ...yes, I did this for the heck of it. Sue me.

Delia Kartmann...nice name.

Chip Sindyce. That actually made me smirk. Good for you.

Michael Drops. Mike Drops... *leaves room* AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!! *comes back* I'm good.

Of course he's a comedian.

And of course he has THAT sprite.

Don't worry Phoenix. You'll be a performer soon enough.

An AI judge. Wonder if it would be more or less fickle than the normal judge.

And Gumshoe's here too! The gang's all here, folks!

Time to do the press everything schtick.

I just noticed. If the autopsy report says March 31, that would mean that the current date in the vr is April 1. Is this all some big April Fools' joke?

...somehow, I could imagine Phoenix wanting to get high. At least, during his hobo years.

Ah, a stuck up comedian. Not someone you see every day.

This guy is calculated if he can determine the time for each joke and laughter.

Ooh! Custom voice for Maya!

A bug in the program? Seems this was made by Bethesda.

Well stand up comedy can be a boxing match depending on your act.

This poster is outdated, Your Honor.

HA! No recess for you, Phoenix.

THE HEART EYES! I can't!

...you know, I can't say I expected it to go this way, but to say it's unexpected wouldn't be true.

Uh oh. The slow clap. This can't be good.

...and it's Gumshoe?

Ah, so we basically pull a Furio Tigre on him. Nice!

Uh oh. The threat of death.

Using the rules of the game against it. Almost reminds me of my case.

Aw, this is actually kinda sad.

Cody Rider...woooooooooooow.

Fun little case, overall! Good job!

That'll certainly be a day I hope to see! (provided you can leave any time you want without dying)

Oh, Edgeworth. Just wait until Spirit of Justice comes around.

PFFFFFT! Okay, that was hilarious.
Assuming you're referring to Miles Payne, then I'm glad you think so!

Also, with this VR stuff, I'm half expecting Monika from DDLC to show up. In which case, I...wouldn't accuse you of stealing my idea since my own case with Monika came after this was first conceived.
It would seem a little weird to essentially treat this like a canon case only to throw in a loop like that

Who cares about stuff like this? It's only Japanifornia! People never get punished for things like perjury here!

Well, hey, now you can see why she felt so hopeless.

Delia Kartmann...nice name.
Can't take the credit for that one; that was the sprite's official name on the forum and I just rolled with it.

Chip Sindyce. That actually made me smirk. Good for you.
I can take credit for this one, as well as all the other custom names, so thank you!

Michael Drops. Mike Drops... *leaves room* AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!! *comes back* I'm good.
I'm still a fan of the slight subtlety of this one.

Of course he's a comedian.

And of course he has THAT sprite.
IIRC, THAT sprite won an award in the comp because he was used in every entry.

Don't worry Phoenix. You'll be a performer soon enough.

An AI judge. Wonder if it would be more or less fickle than the normal judge.

That would certainly be one heck of a twist, but maybe a bit underwhelming.

...somehow, I could imagine Phoenix wanting to get high. At least, during his hobo years.
He certainly looks the part

Ah, a stuck up comedian. Not someone you see every day.

This guy is calculated if he can determine the time for each joke and laughter.

Ooh! Custom voice for Maya!
She's more than earned it

A bug in the program? Seems this was made by Bethesda.

Well stand up comedy can be a boxing match depending on your act.

This poster is outdated, Your Honor.

HA! No recess for you, Phoenix.

THE HEART EYES! I can't!
I know nobody would ever think this was the correct choice, but we definitely need a good joke answer every once in a while

...you know, I can't say I expected it to go this way, but to say it's unexpected wouldn't be true.

Uh oh. The slow clap. This can't be good.

...and it's Gumshoe?

Ah, so we basically pull a Furio Tigre on him. Nice!
Slipping up Tigre is honestly one of my favorite "Gotcha!" moments in the series, and it just seemed fitting to give that treatment to what is essentially the all-knowing god of this reality.

Uh oh. The threat of death.

Using the rules of the game against it. Almost reminds me of my case.
Yeah, I can see the similarities now that you mention it

Aw, this is actually kinda sad.

Cody Rider...woooooooooooow.
NGL, this one took a lot more time to come up with than Chip and Michael's

Fun little case, overall! Good job!
Thank you! Glad you liked it!
It honestly just feels nice to get something playable out there! Responses to the SoC are in blue.

Doing a playthrough of this right now, here's part one.

I'm really enjoying this case so far, it's very high quality and I can tell you put a lot of time and effort in.

Whew, that was quite the ride! So, here are my thoughts.
Spoiler : :
This was a really well-polished case and I can tell a lot of time was put in to make everything perfect. Kudos to you for that. I was able to solve most of the cross-examinations and evidence presents except for one where you’re prompted to present proof there were plenty of people in the casino at the time of death. At first, I thought it was the poster to show there were people there watching, then I thought it was something to do with there being security guards as mentioned before. I understand the logic with presenting the autopsy report, but I think the prompt to present could be phrased better (for example, “I can prove that other people had the opportunity to kill the victim” rather than “I have proof other people were there”). Other than that, this case is solid in my opinion, with my favourite moment being when the Game Master was revealed to be Gumshoe :gumshoe: (I thought for sure it was going to be Udgey :judge: ) and his breakdown animation looked suitably creepy and fantastic. The Game Master’s meddling destroys everything you’ve proven whenever you feel you’re making headway in the case, which makes turning it around on him feel all the more satisfying. Also like how everything came together in the end, with it being revealed that the Game Master isn’t as bad as he seemed, he just wanted a retrial for his friend. It subverted my expectations quite well.
So overall, I really enjoyed this case and if you haven’t played it yet, you should definitely check it out.

Thank you so much for playing the case!
Spoiler : :
I actually watched your playthrough of the case and saw how hard you were struggling with that one part, leading me to wonder what your thought process was behind that, so it's nice to see that you had the right idea, just was unclear of the specific evidence. I might edit the case to reword that section to possibly make it more clear. And I'm glad that the emotional beats were all hit correctly, from the frustration of the Game Master's meddling to taking him down to seeing why he did it all in the first place.

Congratulations on the release! Now that my schedule has lightened up some, I'm hoping to get back into playing more AAO games. The next few days are a bit busy for me, but I'm hoping to have played this by the weekend. I'll type up my thoughts.

And, thoughts on the case, as promised.
Spoiler : :
I really like this one! The underlying story of our Game Master is very in-keeping with the Ace Attorney style, and I really love the concept. Kudos for turning the problem of "how are you going to get Edgeworth to accept this" into a great joke, and keeping him in-character throughout such a crazy case. The cross-examinations were all fair, and this was a great use of the Shelter In Place theme. I also commend your being economical with evidence instead of cluttering the Court Record.

A couple suggestions I would make:
1. I read "Simulation Facts" differently than I think you intended. I assumed the GM had "admin powers" coded already, just not their avatar, so he could with a thought disconnect himself safely or disconnect anyone else unsafely. Perhaps you should establish earlier that this is a "bare-bones" simulation: if you don't see it, it's not coded.
2. If you were to do the case over again, I'd advise making the GM not just an agent but a character. We don't see much of his personality and desires until his breakdown, so it's hard to be empathetic when he reveals his motive.

I can see the points you're making in your suggestions, and I'll keep them in mind. But it's great to hear that you like the case overall!
