I feel much more confident now, thanks, cicman!
Spoiler : :
And, as subtly insinuated in an earlier comment, there actually HAS been an AAO fancase with aliens in Japanifornia. The problem is, it's such an intentionally ridiculous plot twist that telling you which one it is actually ruins the effect.
Spoiler : :
Is that the trial where the witness' head turned into a screen? :D

Probably. There was something to that effect, anyways.

Has there been any trials where the we have to accuse ourself(own player character) in order to buy time? You know, something like...

:objection:

Phoenix: Your honor, the defense would like to open the possibility of a new suspect for this case. You see, my client was not the only one with access to the crime scene during the time of the incident, there was one more individual. None other than yours truly, defense attorney Phoenix Wright!

(cue shocked reactions from everyone)

Judge: Wh-what?!

:objection:

Edgeworth: What kind of madman would accuse himself to buy more time? The prosecution requests that the defense get mental treatment right away!

Phoenix: Whether I'm sane or not isn't the question here your honor! Can you any longer truly declare my client guilty without a doubt? And deny the possibility that you may be letting me, a cold blooded killer run free?!

Because someone should totally make something like this.

I think (having never played it) that there's an Unimeko case that does that, and there have been cases where the player has accused parties they know to be innocent (The Bitter Turnabout comes to mind) but no, I don't believe that's been done.

The problem with accusing yourself is that Edgeworth wouldn't say that. What Edgeworth would say is

"There is no 'accusing' yourself. You know whether you did it or not. So you either confess, or you do not -- you do not 'accuse.'"

I think this kind of thing wouldn't really work in the AA-verse unless it was a jury trial and "beyond a reasonable doubt" was a thing.

Well, if two people are confessing, I could see that leading to the trial possibly being extended at least.
...of course someone's going to get punished for perjury at some point and would probably need a really good in-character reason. ("to prolong the trial" is normally NOT good enough of a reason for Phoenix to just confess to a crime he didn't commit.)

Maybe to save Maya, Pearl or Trucy? Something like that. Of course, the problem with Phoenix confessing is that in pretty much any scenario in which he would do that, he would obviously have an ulterior motive for doing so. ("Your Honor, the defense is clearly attempting to shift blame away from his daughter. I ask that his 'confession' be disregarded.")

The other possibility is where you have a 2-4 situation and some outside force is attempting to force Phoenix to throw a case rather than win it. In that case, 'confessing' may be seen by him as a third option, giving the villains what they want (and so saving their hostage or whatever) while also protecting the client.

Either way, for self-accusation to achieve anything more than a penalty, Phoenix would have to be able to give a plausible story and motive for his crime (make the victim Kristoph or Redd White or something) and actually provide evidence that incriminates him rather than the defendant.

...I guess he could also argue that "the prosecution's evidence equally implicates the defendant and a second person (myself) but precludes the possibility of them working together, so the court cannot say that the prosecution has proven their case," but that's dependent on the concept of Innocent Until Proven Guilty, which is very hard to come by in AA courts.

There's also Phantasmagoria of Betrayal, but I don't think it was used as evidence/rebuttal, just that word in red are always true.

I guys this was one of the Endless Nights cases Bad Player mentioned, but H: A Mystery by Ferdielance had a fair amount with it. I don't know how easy it is to find, but I have links if you want (and, ideally, I could get his permission. Don't know if that's needed or not).

True, but I do like keeping the record accurate.
