What would be legitimate reason for a train to shake hard?

I want to know why a train would shake so hard causing the passenger to trip and fall? Or their belongings to spill out? I need a legit answer. Thanks!

As for your question... well, I guess that if the driver had to break suddenly (perhaps a bridge had broken, or there had been signal failure and they were about to collide into another train), the passengers might trip and fall. There's also the possibility of an earthquake...

I can only think of one way
It would be an emergency brake launched by anyone, most of the trains don't shake when they do that but some may produce a huge shake when they are activated

No legit sources except me, I was in a train which had its emergency brakes activated

It would also depend on the design of the train. The design of the trains here in the UK are a bit odd, because we have the oldest rail network in the world, so trains have to be optimised for lower speeds, smaller stations and short carriages.

However, you could still trip over when the train comes to a stop at a station and you're not holding onto anything.

Hmm... The emergency breaks are a good reason to go with. I'd go with the signal failure, wherein the trains are about to collide with each other. Otherwise, it could be just simply going over a hilly land.
My brother was on a train once, he said it started shaking as they went over some hills.

How about a track fault, like the track became bent somehow? The train might go too fast over a fault in the track almost, but not, derailing. It would probably make it shake. It usually depends on how heavy the train is though. fast and heavy trains (most modern trains effectively) will probably just run straight through. Old trains would be more easy to rock about. Same goes with tracks actually. If just need an excuse, you could say the tracks are worn out etc. If you want something exciting, then you could go with the train almost colliding with another. It's up to what you want.
