When should a witness be askedfor their name and occupation?
When in court, when the witness has just appeared in the stand, what is the time for the change from witness to prosecution asking their name and occupation?

That depends. If it is is someone familiar and/or eccentric, you can have some random talk before. Otherwise most people just get there right away.
Just focus on making it work well in your case and less about strict rules.
