It's not a blur. GS sprites are crisp and clean and never, ever use blur or anything else. GS4 and AAI sprites have richer and more diverse palettes and much stronger anti-alias, which gives it that nice feel to it. For example, the average AA sprite has 16 colours while GS4 would have 40. Oh, Ok. But, since I'm too lazy to do that shading by hand, I just use blur around the places where the shade changes.
