@Meph: Oh Meph... what did I tell you, earlier?
@Netghost: Only use GIMP for animating. Gimp is NOT the program you want to use for image editing.
Paint.net works well for image combining.

Yeah, GIMP is somewhat needlessly complicated for sprite editing. It's only real use in spriting is for animation.

If you are working with .gif-files in Gimp, set the image mode to RGB (Image -> Mode -> RGB), then you can open other images and use your own colors.

...You know I use GIMP for spriting, don't you?
Though I agree with Lind about GIMP being a little unneccessary complicated for spriting I'd still recommend learning it as it can satisfy your all digital art needs, not just spriting. If you know how to use it it's just as good or even better for spriting than Pain.NET. On the minus side... if you don't then you fail.
But your problem is indeed caused by indexed palette and just follow Evo's instructions and it should be solved. Though unlike she said the same problem *can* occur in any file type that can use indexed colours, not just gif. I for one use that function mostly with .PNGs. It's really handy when it comes to making my sprites or backgrounds more AA style.
