The characters are hard to recognise but pretty damn cute.
As for custom sprites, you could just draw the characters and reduce them to the screen size, since you draw well that would be the easier for you and you would most certainly get an amazing result.

Btw I love the way you colour hair~ I've tried that style a couple of times but I never seem to get it right :O
Anyways, time for some constructive criticism~! The only real anathomy complaint I have is about Reimu's shoulders - now she looks a bit like a bodybuilder there. I'd also like to see you drawing HANDS seeing you've strategically hid them most of the time. You should also have stronger shading. I understand it's your style not to make strong shadows but now your characters' skin looks simply too flat. Just try to be a little more daring with the shadows and you'll be fine even more awesome~

Asdflglkdjfslk why are all See-U fanarts so darn good?! Seriously though, that pic is great. I'll just point out, though, that your only anatomical error seems to be the face. More specifically, the nose and the mouth. The nose is too high for the shape of the face, and whenever you do that open-mouthed smile, the angle and position of the mouth is wrong.

Oh, it seems you really can draw hands. Except they're a bit too small in SeeU's case. Fixing that should be easy though as you can just resize them. Another thing you could improve on is folds on the clothes. Now there's literally just a couple of them. Other than that... My complaint about the shading still stands. Try to remember that even within a shade the strenght changes. Currently the shade right under SeeU's skirt is exactly the same as the one close to her knee while in real world under the skirt would be darker and next to her knee lighter.
