Q: were the two best friends fencing illegal items?
...yes...

The friend confessed to the crime he didn't commit because otherwise it would have meant he lost the duel. And he was too prideful or had some other kind of reason not to lose.
Blue truth... Ineffective.
@kwando:
Q: Were they fencing in terms of partaking in the sport of fencing?
Noooope.
Q: If they were, were they doing épée? Q: Were they doing sabre? Q: Were they doing foil?
The crime the other was found guilty of wasn't murder - they were found guilty of smuggling goods illegally, so the death of the first guy is wholly irrelevant.

The third party killed a friend and the other was found guilty of illegally fencing items

Congratulations. Either of you two can now post your own red truth and raise to puzzlonaire rank, priority of course going to enigma! I doubt anyone really wishes to continue with this riddle though because it should be fairly clearly now.
See? It wasn't too difficult!
(By the way, it isn't relevant to the actual answer, and so, totally useless information, but...)
Spoiler : subsidiary details :
The first fencer was killed by the same cop who arrested the the second one. And in case anyone asked a very specific question, they happened to be fencing priceless swords!
Also I realize the red truth states the second was found guilty half an hour later instead of being arrested but let's just pretend the trial happened very very quickly
A time traveler, who can travel through time at the speed of light, is shot and killed. His friends, who are also time travelers, mourn his death but do not go back in time and save him.
How was the time traveler killed without escaping? And why did his friends not save him?
Time for a locked room mystery! I didn't make this one up, so... don't google it okay.
Two people have their car break down in the middle of a desert. There is no-one in the immediate vicinity. Close by, there is a town, however. As such, one of the two exits the car and runs into town. Before he goes he locks the car. There is no way for someone to enter the car, and the other passenger would not open the door for anyone but the first person.
Despite all this, when the first person returns with help, the other passenger is dead and a stranger (whom he has never seen before in his life) is in the car. And, yes, the stranger was the cause of the other passengers death.
The doors and windows are still locked, and were never opened during the time the first person was away from the car.
