This is CLAMP we're talking about after all... Though personally I think they just wanted to make him finally crack for good.
But honestly, they went to such extremes to torture him emotionally that it became rather ridiculous.

I can't believe I forgot... how about Satoko from Higurashi and Maria from Umineko? THEY GET ABUSED BY EVERYONE, FROM KICKS, TO BOOKS, TO THROW ON THE GROUND, TO SLAP SLAP SLAP, GETTING EATEN BY THEIR MOM, TORTURED BY EVERYONE AROUND THEM, STABBED A MILLION TIMES UNTIL SHE MEETS HER DEATH, SPIT IN THE FACE, AND EVENTUALLY SNAP AND KILL EVERYONE AROUND THEM TOO.

That's abuse right there.

Not to mention Yasu from Umineko. Not as bad, but still.

And Battler, for being incompetent.

And Furude Rika, for being stuck in the loop of fate forever and ever. But I digress...

I am NOT kidding. It's depressing. The game is practically MESSED UP it's so sad.
First off, there aren't many characters. There are less then ten with names in the entire game. I'll be spoiling now, so read at your own risk:

First off, there's Seto, who managed to survive an APOCALYPSE, and after BURYING HIS GRANDFATHER, he goes off searching the empty world for a friend. Then he meets Ren, who is the future catalyst for a SECOND ATTEMPT at the experiment that killed everyone. Yet she's somehow...decently cheery, or at least a little oblivious. Anway, Seto searches for her after their first encounter, and meets MORE major Woobies along the way. First, there's Personal Frame, a backpack shaped A.I. who helps Seto for a little while. She develops an obvious crush on Seto (this is actually more tragic then creepy, especially with Seto being dead set on finding Ren, and being oblivious), and eventually, her battery runs out and she "dies". Then Seto buries HER and keeps a screw as a memento. Then he meets Crow, who is a fan favorite and an actually really cheery character. Buuuut he later is discovered to be an android and he "dies" when his battery runs out, just like P.F. There's also the Merchant, who is a weird guy in a chicken mask who sells you stuff and pushes a baby carriage. HE turns out to be a robot nanny, caring for a little baby girl in the carriage...completely in denial about her being dead. Yep, dead babies. Sad enough for you? Well, THEN there's Chiyo, the least important character, who, while meeting you as a young woman, turns out to be an old lady, who dies after being reunited with her wedding ring. AND THEN there's Sai, a ghost who was killed as a catalyst for the apocalyptic experiment, who fell in love with the villain when she was being watched by him. Speaking of which, Shin, the villain and a scientist, is the one who caused the apocalypse and hates humanity and blah blah blah. And he didn't even realize Sai loved him when he caused her death! ARGH! Everyone is a depressing character! A boy alone in the world, a girl who is oblivious to her upcoming death (well, she lives, but I digress), an AI with a forbidden loves who DIES, an android who is cheery until he DIES (by the way, it's a HORRIBLY sad death, he keeps repeating "my best friend" over and over again...), a robot who doesn't know the one he cares for is dead, an old woman who was left alive after her fiancee's death, a ghost who loved her killer, and a scientist who didn't realize what harm he has done!

*whew* Sorry for the long speech there, each character needed to be explained because they ALL fit.

I think characters from Dynasty Warriors and Soul Calibur are abused altogether. *shot*

Poor Luigi in those Mario games. He deserves more credit to team instead of being picked on.
His stories in Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door are awesome.
