Funny thing is that I thought that Light was evil from the first chapter and I know that if I had a Death Note I wouldn't do the same as I think killing everyone is just incredibly short sighted and doesn't take care of the root of the problems. That being said Light is still by far my favourite character in Death Note. When I first went to anime forums I was really surprised how many of the Light fans are actually pro-Kira.

Well, the most important thing about Kira isn't so much the killing everyone bad as it is the idea of an active God on Earth judging everyone. Fear of retribution is literally the only reason some people act within widely accepted moral guidelines. With such an immediate and assured hand judging the world's evil, evil becomes far less appealing.

...Ironically, I'm anti-death penalty. Go figure.

I have exactly the same views on Kira, which is why I prefer L. (Aside from his quirkiness  ) His idea would work if he wasn't still human. Like Ryuk said, Light would be the only bad person left in his "world"

Bad people would inevitably still pop up. It was a pretty thoughtless comment from Ryuk. Kira would still need to constantly maintain his world and stop people from causing misery.

"There'd still be bad people" doesn't really counter "There'd be less bad people". :P

The real problem is:
Who is he to judge who is bad and who is good?
He simply kills of everyone he thinks of as evil, and everyone who doesn't agree with his views as well.
Simple dictatorship. Nothing more, nothing less.
Whether THAT's a bad or good thing is of course also a matter of opinion. ^^'

Well, the creator of Death Note said that it wasn't a big moral thing; it was mostly just Light VS L. And whoever comes after L.

Light killed people who were actually trying to catch him, not just people who were anti-Kira. It was either kill them, get caught or give up. And to be honest, would anyone really argue that people such as murderers and rapists aren't evil?

Okay, I'm not reading other posts, and I've kept fairly spoiler-free.

I enjoyed Higurashi, the works of Junji Ito, Higanbana (thus far), so would I enjoy Death Note (without spoilers)?

Well I haven't read any of those but I'll say yes because I've seen about one person in the world who doesn't like Death Note.

Don't expect it to be as dark as Uzumaki. It's not the same kind of thing.

It definitely has a very Shonen vibe to it, and the focus is all on the battle of wits. I'd say being an Ace Attorney fan is more of a sign that you'll like it than either of those.

I've always had a strange dislike for Death Note just because of how super incredibly popular it is. Like, it's popular among people who don't typically watch anime. Everybody seems to love it and everybody I wouldn't expect to watch it seems to watch it. I haven't actually watched it, mind you, and I probably would have if I wasn't so afraid that I would like it.

...that's got to be the second or third weirdest thing I've ever said.

The manga's about 25765 times better however. The anime is stuffed with filler, cuts out pages and pages of scenes, some extremely important causing plot holes to pop up and even foreshadows so blatatingly that it ends up dropping major spoilers. It's probably the most pathetic adaptation of a manga I've ever seen.

Man, I love it.

But I'd definitely recommend the manga. Because the manga's better, like it almost always is.

Oh my God, these chocodiles, oh my God.

Wrong show.
Anyway, I like the series thus far, and loved it. Penbar's gf's death was easily the most depressing moment, and L going "lol, I'm L" is currently my favorite. It's like the ultimate trolling contest. X3
Also, it's very Faustian, so it appeases my inner snob.
