Cartoons & Animation

Post by Wackyman »

In commemoration of the new Media and Entertainment subforum, I decided to make a new topic.

Here you can talk about any American cartoon or any work of animation that's on your mind. Have fun discussing. :P

Don't really need to explain why, I hope, but I've been rewatching The Powerpuff Girls.

Greatest. Kids. Show. Ever. Even better than Friendship is Magic, and coming from me that's saying something.

The girls themselves are adorable, the fight scenes are surprisingly violent for a kid's show, and the humor is still first-rate and fast paced. It's too bad each episode is 10 minutes instead of 25, as everything can feel a little rushed with how much they cram into each episode.

You know, I remember watching that as a kid. I stopped watching when I starting caring about "being manly". Now that that phase is done and over I may rewatch it. I do remember it being quite good.

Also the Devil guy was awesome.

Never watched it, for obvious reasons. I don't think I'll ever watch it, but then again, I did start watching MLP: FiM, so...

Spongebob Squarepants is one of my all-time favorite cartoons. It was probably the first cartoon I ever watched, and it's only gotten funnier as time goes on. Nowadays I realize how dumb it is and all the strangeness there, but I still like it. Spongebob is like the best friend I never had and never will.
Unfortunately, like all shows, Spongebob has gone downhill. I watched some of the newer episodes, and they made me sick. If I have to change the channel FROM Spongebob to a COMMERCIAL, then that's saying something. But the classics are great, and the humor was actually pretty clever at some points. Not to say they didn't go for the cheap laughs, but they also had some legitimate humor, which makes even an adult like my father laugh.

In conclusion, Spongebob is awesome. End of story.

Powerpuff Girls ISN'T girly, though. It's not even actually intended for girls, it was meant to be an everyone thing -- some people just assumed it was for girls since two of the three main characters were very girly. In fact, most of the show's best characters (The Mayor, The Professor, Mojo Jojo, HiM, etc.) are all male.

...Okay, so we just ASSUME HiM is male, but still.

It's nothing like Friendship is Magic. Except that it... really kind of is. It's actually eerie how similar I feel watching both shows, except that Powerpuff Girls comes without any self-loathing.

---------------

Yeah, Spongebob used to be awesome. Even the new ones occasionally have their moments...

Shows I remember from CN from the late 90s-early 2000:
  • Powerpuff Girls
What Hodou said. The other people I remember well are the Gangrene Gang, the Amoeba Gang, Him, Sedusa, the Mayor, Professor, and finally Mojo Jojo.
  • Dexter's Laboratory (though the last season pissed me off... >.>)
I found it a funny watch. Now watching it again, it now grates me, since they keep up with the annoying Dee Dee destroying Dexter's Lab... How much more annoying can Dee Dee ever get? And the last season was a total switch from the regular seasons... I mean, they changed the friggin art style! That can't be good! D:
  • Courage the Cowardly Dog
This is one show I can watch over and over again and I'd still be entertained. It's a boring premise, but the stories per episode are EPIC! And this is one of the shows I can consider to be consistently epic. So many villains, it's not even funny. There's ungodly amounts of cartoony violence, and that's perhaps why I liked it. The animation got better with time, and so did the stories. Though the violence level dropped, the quality didn't, at least for me.Ever since Muriel banged that rolling pin over Eustace with a trumpet fanfare running, I looked forward to watching those episodes, waiting for Muriel to hit Eustace over the head. Forget the fact that she's a damsel in distress. What make it awesome that when both of them are kidnapped, Courage usually rescues Muriel and leaves Eustace to his karmic fate, b****! :awesome:
  • Samurai Jack
Maybe it was because I was into the samurai thing at the time (and thanks to my visit to the Mt. Fuji restaurant in Hillburn, NY, I got back into it), but I found this show interesting. A show about Jack (okay, what kind of samurai has the name Jack?) who is trying to destroy Aku because Aku destroyed his village (or something like that, I forget) and then gets transported hundreds of years into the future... Who would've thought that would work. Bur surprisingly it did, for me. It's nice to see how Jack adapted to the modern times and beat the monsters' asses. It's too bad I never saw the ending... D:

Courage is amazing yeah. It's so hard to find episodes though. :(

I'll have to re-watch PPG sometime, if Hodou says something I'm not inclined to doubt it. I haven't seen an episode since I was like 10.

Oh, but one of the most amazing cartoons (possibly the best) ever has to be Earthworm Jim. My words couldn't do it justice so I'll just show a clip to give a sample of the awesome. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WNisp1QA5g New Zealand has the complete set out on DVD, the jerks. :(

I can't not mention AOSTH either. AOSTH forever, haters gonna hate.

...Now that I think of it... Every single cartoon that I actually *liked* as a kid, save for one, was an anime (yes, you read that right. I didn't even like Disney, wait even worse... I didn't like MOOMINS!! Here *everyone* likes Moomins...)! And when I didn't know it was an anime prejudicies never influenced me... Whoa, I never realised that I was already an otaku that young.
That one western cartoon I liked was The Sylvester & Tweety Mysteries. See? My tastes (mystery genre~) haven't changed a bit! Heh, I still have those in VHS~ Actually, I even rewatched them a couple of years ago and I still liked them.

Daring duck of mystery,
Champion of right,
Swoops out of the shadows,
Darkwing owns the night.
Somewhere some villain schemes,
But his number's up.
3, 2, 1

Darkwing Duck
When there's trouble, you call D.W.
Darkwing Duck
LET'S. GET. DANGEROUS
Darkwing Duck
Darkwing, Darkwing Duck!

Cloud of smoke and he appears,
The master of surprise.
Who's that cunning mind behind
That shadowy disguise?
Nobody knows for sure,
Bad guys are out of luck.

'Cause here comes Darkwing Duck
Look out!
When there's trouble, you call D.W.
Darkwing Duck
LET'S. GET. DANGEROUS
Darkwing Duck
Better watch out, you bad boys
DARKWING DUCK!

Adventures Of Super Mario Bros. 3! I love that show, despite all the dumb animation errors, it's my favourite Western cartoon based on a video game.

Invader ZIM was the best cartoon created by anyone ever. Everything that GIR said was just pure gold. The fact that it was cancel was just horrible. It was one of the only children's cartoons that had me laughing from start to finish.

Also, Ed, Edd n' Eddy was an awesome show. Just sayin'.
