Compendium of Lawyers

Postby Aeliren » Sat Dec 03, 2016 8:20 am

This is a list of pretty much every lawyer (that isn't in DGS and its upcoming sequel) made to give a quick synopsis on the character and their motivations/quirks/skill/etc., as well as making a list of most plausible match-ups between them for their canon time periods. This is for people who'd like to review quick character concepts and/or wants to see which attorney/prosecutor court pairings are plausible in trials.

Note that this is not a rulebook or guide; if you want to have, say, Manfred von Karma face off against Athena Cykes, or Miles Edgeworth against his father Gregory, it's your trial. Exaggerated examples, but these are only plausible match-ups based on the canon timeline.

Currently a work in progress.

WARNING: Several spoilers from most main games as well as the Investigations series may be present.

Years active: August 2013 - September 2016
Possible match-ups:

  • Neil Marshall
Marvin Grossberg - The strict head of the Grossberg Law Offices, Marvin Grossberg is a veteran defense attorney who has been around in the courts for a long time, outlasting each of his former employees, and was Mia's mentor. Has to tendency to go on about nostalgic memories of his past, complain about his hemorrhoids and clear his throat in an exaggerated manner to get attention.

Possible match-ups:
  • Miles Edgeworth
  • Manfred von Karma
  • Franziska von Karma
  • Byrne Faraday
  • Neil Marshall
  • Blaise Debeste
  • Sebastian Debeste
  • Jacques Portsman
Robert Hammond - A former employee at the Grossberg Law Offices. Though skilled, Hammond doesn't care so much about his clients, and the only thing he trusts is his own ability as a lawyer. An amoral attorney, whatever it takes to secure that not guilty verdict that remains within legal boundaries, no matter the consequences after the end of the trial or whether his client is guilty or not, is fair game to him.
Years active: - December 2016
Possible match-ups:
  • Manfred von Karma
  • Miles Edgeworth
  • Franziska von Karma
  • Winston Payne
  • Neil Marshall
  • Byrne Faraday
Diego Armando - The arrogant, cynical ace of the Grossberg Law Offices. Thinks he's a hot-shot, and if you think he's bluffing you're in for a bad time. Where most lawyers would be breaking up into a flop sweat or searching for their pencils under their desk, Armando keeps his cool and his confidence, and is hard to rattle or shock. Almost always has a mug of his personally-blended coffee with him, and woe to you if you make him break it.
Years active: - August 2013
Possible match-ups:
  • Winston Payne
  • Manfred von Karma
  • Franziska von Karma
  • Miles Edgeworth
  • Neil Marshall
  • Byrne Faraday
Gregory Edgeworth - Miles's father and easily one of the greatest defense attorneys of his time, Gregory Edgeworth was the only known attorney who could go toe-to-toe with Manfred von Karma until Phoenix came along, and that was without bluffing and grasping at straws. He did this for a whole year. Courteous, by-the-book and professional, he takes his job seriously and is very respectful towards others, not letting the rumors about Manfred von Karma affect his opinion on the man until evidence of his misdeeds start appearing throughout the IS-7 incident. Notably, he was the one who got von Karma the only penalty he ever got on his 40-year record, which he did by out gambiting him and getting a recording of the forced confession of his client. It's hard to anger him or rattle him, though he takes it very badly when someone tries to hide the truth because it's "inconvenient".
Years active: - December 2001
Possible match-ups:
  • Manfred von Karma
  • Blaise Debeste
Raymond Shields - Gregory Edgeworth's former assistant, he followed in his mentor's footsteps after his murder and became a defense attorney, keeping the Edgeworth Law Offices for his own. Shields is pretty laid-back and confident with a healthy dose of sarcasm, and he rarely lets people fully on what he has in mind (seriously, get this guy to the Borscht Bowl Club, it'd be awesome). Notably, Shields has repeatedly defended numerous guilty individuals knowingly due to feeling compassion for their plight, and attempts to get them a less harsh verdict.
Years active: 2001 -
Possible match-ups:
  • Miles Edgeworth
  • Franziska von Karma
  • Winston Payne
  • Byrne Faraday
  • Jacques Portsman
  • Sebastian Debeste
  • Klavier Gavin
  • Simon Blackquill (pre UR-1)
Calisto Yew - A skilled defense attorney, Calisto Yew is actually a plant from an international smuggling ring and a third of the Great Thief Yatagaratsu. Though cool and composed, she is prone to fits of hysterical laughter when she is confronted to ridiculous character tics, such as Edgeworth's stuffiness and constant seriousness.
Years active: - September 2012
Possible match-ups:
  • Byrne Faraday
  • Miles Edgeworth
  • Manfred von Karma
  • Winston Payne
  • Neil Marshall
Kristoph Gavin - Where some more amoral attorneys would draw the line, Kristoph Gavin leaps over it with a 50 mile dash. A seeker of glory and renown, Kristoph has his eyes set on some notable cases to build up his reputation, such as State vs. Shadi Enigmar. To attain his goals, he isn't above falsifying evidence. Known as "The Coolest Defense in the West", he is a difficult opponent to truly rattle, though paranoia catches up to him in some of his more elaborate schemes.
Years active: - April 2027
Possible match-ups:
  • Winston Payne
  • Gaspen Payne
  • Miles Edgeworth
  • Franziska von Karma
  • Klavier Gavin
  • Godot
  • Sebastian Debeste
  • Jacques Portsman
  • Simon Blackquill (pre UR-1)
Apollo Justice -
Years active: 2026 - Present
Possible match-ups:
  • Klavier Gavin
  • Miles Edgeworth
  • Franziska von Karma
  • Simon Blackquill
  • Nahyuta Sahdmadhi
Athena Cykes -
Years active: c. 2027 - Present
Possible match-ups:
  • Klavier Gavin
  • Miles Edgeworth
  • Franziska von Karma
  • Simon Blackquill
Aristotle Means - "The end justifies the means" - more than just a policy, it is a way of life for Aristotle Means. Though he appears to be a benevolent, if somewhat creepy lawyer, he is a major part of the "Dark Age of the Law" due to his way of thinking becoming more commonplace. To Means, falsifying evidence and bribery are not only optional, but recommended methods of action to take in order to win.
Years active: - October 2027
Possible match-ups:
  • Miles Edgeworth
  • Franziska von Karma
  • Sebastian Debeste
  • Klavier Gavin
  • Simon Blackquill (pre UR-1)

Spoiler : Prosecutors :
Winston Payne - A veteran prosecutor, Winston Payne has been around long enough to see rookies become legends. However, he lacks presence and tends to let his witnesses do the talking in order to prove a defendant's guilt rather than elaborate his own logical arguments. Thus, when his witnesses' testimonies fall apart, so does his case. His confidence appears to be proportional to the amount of hair he has: when he faced off against Mia he was cool, arrogant and quite competent, and never quite recovered during Phoenix Wright's years. However, by Apollo Justice he has grown his hair on the sides and appears to be quite proud of it, and is slightly more arrogant than before - though he spends more time mocking Apollo and flipping his hair than actually prosecuting. Though he isn't considered to be one of the best prosecutors, it's worthwhile to mention that he never lost in his first seven years, which is a longer win streak than both Franziska von Karma (6 years) and Miles Edgeworth (4 years), both of them disciples of Manfred von Karma. Unlike most of the prosecutors (including his own brother), Winston is one of the cleanest prosecutors in the office: he never forged evidence, he protected his witnesses from badgering and didn't badger other witnesses.
Years active: - Present
Possible match-ups:
  • Mia Fey
  • Marvin Grosssberg
  • Robert Hammond
  • Diego Armando
  • Phoenix Wright
  • Calisto Yew
  • Raymond Shields
  • Kristoph Gavin
  • Aristotle Means
  • Apollo Justice
  • Athena Cykes
Miles Edgeworth - Edgeworth is an interesting prosecutor to put in a trial, since his way of thinking and going about things is different depending on which period of his life you're talking about. Pre-1-4 Edgeworth was known as the "Demon Prosecutor", and for a damn good reason. He was as vicious as von Karma, drawing the line at actual illegal methods such as (knowingly) falsifying evidence, though he wasn't above presenting a witness under a pseudonym (Dahlia Hawthorne/"Melissa Foster"). You can expect him to push with everything he has for a guilty verdict. Post-1-4 Edgeworth takes a drastic turn, and his goal changes from getting guilty verdicts to uncovering the truth, no matter what, using his position as a prosecutor. However, his availability following his promotion to Chief Prosecutor varies. He doesn't show up behind the bench as much anymore unless there are special circumstances. For instance, in 5-5 he prosecuted because it was part of Aura Blackquill's demands, and in 6-DLC everybody else was too afraid to prosecute the bride of the Sprocket family heir. Nevertheless, despite not being as active in court he remains a difficult opponent. In every case, he tackles his problems with logic (also known as Magical Lawyer Superpower #3).
Years active: 2012 - Present
Possible match-ups:
  • Mia Fey
  • Robert Hammond
  • Marvin Grossberg
  • Diego Armando
  • Phoenix Wright
  • Calisto Yew
  • Raymond Shields
  • Kristoph Gavin
  • Aristotle Means
  • Apollo Justice
  • Athena Cykes
Manfred von Karma - The "god of prosecutors", Manfred von Karma is a veteran prosecutor who has been active in the courts for about 40 years. Creating a trial with Manfred von Karma as prosecutor could prove to be a complicated challenge. For starters, it likely won't end well for the defendant, though this isn't necessarily a bad thing - there have been two verdict-less trials (3-4 and 4-5 flashback) and at least two outright guilty verdicts (6-3 and GK2-3 flashback) during the course of the series, so it's still workable. Usually, you pretty much need only worry about the witnesses and culprit, but the thing about a von Karma trial is that it also has to be built around him. He kept his record going for 40 long years because of the way he ran his trial perfectly, with nearly everything planned in advance. To him, what is most important above all is his perfect win record.
Years active: 1976 - December 2016
Possible match-ups:
  • Gregory Edgeworth
  • Marvin Grossberg
  • Robert Hammond
  • Diego Armando
  • Mia Fey
  • Calisto Yew
Lana Skye - Unlike most on this list, Lana Skye started her career as a detective, becoming Chief Prosecutor after the SL-9 incident in which Prosecutor Neil Marshall was murdered, thanks to the influence of then-newly appointed Chief of Police Damon Gant. Prior to the SL-9 incident, Lana was described as being a cheerful and happy person. However, after becoming Chief Prosecutor she became cold and withdrawn to others in order to protect her sister Ema. Due to the bureaucratic position of Chief Prosecutor, she likely rarely acted as prosecutor in court. However, as Miles Edgeworth showed, the Chief Prosecutor can personally act as prosecutor if the situation requires it.
Years active: 2015 - 2017
Possible match-ups:
  • Mia Fey
  • Phoenix Wright
  • Marvin Grossberg
  • Robert Hammond
  • Kristoph Gavin
Neil Marshall - Very little is actually known about Neil Marshall, though he was considered good enough to win the "King of Prosecutors" award and was the prosecutor initially in charge of the SL-9 case. Judging from his clothing style, he likely had the same taste in the culture of the wild west as his brother.
Years active: - February 2015
Possible match-ups:
  • Mia Fey
  • Marvin Grossberg
  • Robert Hammond
  • Diego Armando
Franziska von Karma -
Years active: 2012 - Present
Possible match-ups:
  • Phoenix Wright
  • Mia Fey
  • Raymond Shields
  • Marvin Grossberg
  • Robert Hammond
  • Diego Armando
  • Kristoph Gavin
  • Apollo Justice
  • Athena Cykes
Godot/Diego Armando - Take Diego Armando, at the top of his game: best attorney at the Grossberg Law Offices, in a good relationship with his girlfriend and everything is going well. Add a 4-year coma, during which his girlfriend is murdered, the killer is incarcerated and the girl he was trying to put behind bars has been caught by the late Mia Fey. He failed to save the day, he failed to save the girl and he's lost everything he had. Diego Armando was dead, and all that remained was Godot, for whom nobody was waiting for when he woke up. A post-3-5 trial involving Godot is plausible, considering that Simon Blackquill was allowed to prosecute despite being behind bars for straight-up premeditated murder, but the main reason he went into prosecuting was to size up Phoenix and test him. The identity of "Godot" even went away at the end of 3-5, where he identifies himself as Diego Armando once more. Notably, he's the only known lawyer who has been both defense attorney and prosecutor full-time.
Years active: October 2018 - February 2019
Possible match-ups:
  • Phoenix Wright
  • Marvin Grossberg
  • Raymond Shields
  • Kristoph Gavin
  • Aristotle Means
Jacques Portsman - To Jacques Portsman, sports is everything, and he tries to bring it into his prosecuting as much as he can, placing a basketball hoop in front of his office and spending a lot of his time training or playing with his associated detective, Buddy Faith. His office, reflecting its owner, is filled to the brim with sports articles, trophies and miscellaneous items. Cheerful and impulsive, he goes on about how he cares for his friends and can come off as quite emotionally empowered. However, Portsman hides a secret: he is a plant from an international smuggling ring with the job of concealing information and evidence, a secret he will make you take to your grave with no regrets if you find out, friend or otherwise.
Years active: - March 2019
Possible match-ups:
  • Phoenix Wright
  • Marvin Grossberg
  • Kristoph Gavin
  • Raymond Shields
Byrne Faraday -
Years active: - September 2012
Possible match-ups:
  • Calisto Yew
  • Marvin Grossberg
  • Robert Hammond
  • Diego Armando
  • Raymond Shields
Sebastian Debeste - Initially, Sebastian is obsessed with being "the best" at everything in order to please the people in his entourage. Though he's rash, arrogant and cocky, he doesn't have the logical prowess to back it up, and he tends to arrest the wrong people with flawed, if nonsensical arguments and logic, uses the wrong words, presents the wrong evidence (if he didn't forget what it was called). In fact, he was considered to be so incompetent that both Larry Butz and Dick Gumshoe referred to him as an idiot. He wasn't afraid of claiming that he had made discoveries that the police had actually made on their own. Childish and naive, he believed that his goal was to defeat his rival, and he tended to break down easily when someone proved him wrong. Following his father's arrest, he's begun to rely more on himself rather than gaining other people's approval.
Possible match-ups:
  • Phoenix Wright
  • Marvin Grossberg
  • Raymond Shields
  • Kristoph Gavin
  • Aristotle Means
Blaise Debeste - The former Chief Prosecutor of the Los Angeles Prosecutor's Office and Chairman of the Prosecutorial Investigation Committee, Blaise Debeste was as corrupt as they came. Forging evidence, disposing evidence, kidnapping and using his authority to remove "problematic prosecutors", nothing was out of reach for him: "When you get to where I am, you can just create your own truths. Anytime you want." Back in his day, he admitted to have sentenced several people to life in prison despite them asking for a plea bargain. He was the one who gave Manfred von Karma his only penalty, provided him with the forged autopsy report that provoked Gregory Edgeworth's fury and got himself involved in other dirty business. Due to the bureaucratic position of Chief Prosecutor and later that of Chairman of the P.I.C., he likely rarely acted as prosecutor in court. However, as Miles Edgeworth showed, the Chief Prosecutor can personally act as prosecutor if the situation requires it, and even as Chairman of the P.I.C. he likely could have personally prosecuted in his later years. Unlike Manfred von Karma, he didn't care much about a perfect win record, though in exchange he was much more pragmatic. The long term effects and advantages that he can manipulate are much more important than a single case.
Years active: - April 2019
Possible match-ups:
  • Gregory Edgeworth
  • Mia Fey
  • Phoenix Wright
  • Marvin Grossberg
  • Robert Hammond
  • Diego Armando
  • Calisto Yew
  • Kristoph Gavin
  • Raymond Shields
Klavier Gavin - Unlike his brother Kristoph, Klavier Gavin is a much more stable person, and as a prosecutor he is one of the friendliest ones you could meet. Unlike most rivals in court, he is not concerned with holding a win record, besting his opponent or maintaining perfection - in fact, "rival" would be a strange word to describe him. He takes his job seriously, and all he wants is the truth, and he's perfectly willing to help the defense if it will bring it to light. He enjoys teasing his associates and opponents, making pet names for them ("Fräulein Detective", "Herr Forehead" and so on). He uses several German words in his speech, though he isn't actually German. Music is his hobby, and he had his own band, the Gavinners, in which he was the lead vocalist and guitarist. His mannerisms have earned him the nickname of "glimmerous fop" from Ema Skye.
Years active: April 2019 - Present
Possible match-ups:
  • Phoenix Wright
  • Raymond Shields
  • Apollo Justice
  • Athena Cykes
Gaspen Payne - Unlike his brother Winston, Gaspen Payne is much more amoral in his methods and is much more aggressive in his prosecuting, not above badgering a defendant until they admit their guilt. Though he calls himself a "genteel man" much like Winston, his brother actually fits the bill much better. He didn't give himself the nickname "Defendant/Rookie Humiliator" for nothing. For good reason, he's fired by Chief Prosecutor Edgeworth some time after the UR-1 retrial, though he later manages to find himself some work in the Kingdom of Khura'in where he rises to the position of Chief Prosecutor, though not because of his own skill but rather due to the lack of defense attorneys in the country. Unlike Chief Prosecutors of the United States, it is implied that he often takes to the courts personally. He holds immense grudges, having vowed to defeat Phoenix in 5-1 in order to cleanse Winston of his shame and later attempting to have him killed under the Khuran'ian DC Act as revenge for defeating him.
