Tutorial: How to make a map with "MS Paint"

Post by Broocevelt »

Creating a Map

There are several ways to create a map. This is the best one, and will be almost as in AA.
We will be using Microsoft Paint.

Let's take an original map:
Spoiler : Original :
Image
As you can see, there are some rules for the maps.
  • No square borders. Round borders only.
  • Windows are represented as a thiner wall.
  • Objects outlines are thiner than the walls.
  • There is a color for inside/outside the buildings.
  • The object outline is the same color as the wall, same for letters.
  • Letters have a white outline.
These are the AA-style rules. But here are some rules that make it more esthetic.
  • The inside of the objects can have a light gray.
  • The doors also can have a light gray.
Here is the color scheme I use.
Spoiler : Clolor scheme :

And for the sizes:
  • Walls: 3 pixels (4 for big walls, 2 for thin ones)
  • Windows: 1 pixel.
  • Objects: 1 pixel.
Anyway, you'll only have to care about the walls. I made the objects for you.

First, create a 256x192 blank image.
You can do that by creating a new file, and then going to "Image / Attributes".

Use the bucket and put the "outside" color.
Take it from the color scheme I showed you before, by using the "Copy Image" tool.

Make the basic rooms.
Start making the rooms you want to show with this tool:
Image
Remember to use a 3px width. To do so, hold "-" (minus) some seconds, and press "+" twice.
Also, remember to be using the brown color from the color scheme.

Fill the rooms with the appropriated color.
Use the bucket to do so, and take the right color from the scheme.

Put the doors between the rooms that are connected.
Use these doors. Use the "copy image" tool. (Right click on the images).

You can rotate the doors obviously as you wish.

Create the windows.
Or more precisely "erase 2 lines of pixels from the wall".
Leave 1 line of pixels in the middle of the wall instead of 3 to represent the window like in the original map.

Put the objects.
I have some objects for you here. You can take them by using the "Copy image" tool.
Couch: Image
Round object: Image
Rectangle object: Image
And of course, you can rotate them as you wish.

Put the Killer, the Victim and eventually a Witness.
Here you have them:

Put the location names.
The font you must use is "Verdana". (It comes with Windows). Size 8, Bold.
And the color is the one from the walls.
Verdana looks like this (Without the color you should put)
Image

Make the white border for the letters.
Now you should do this manually. Make the outline by tourself to make it look like this:
Image

And now you should have your map done!
I used this technique and achieved this:

You should be able to do something even better with this tutorial.
Post what you managed to do here! :D

This is a very nice tutorial.
Exactly what I needed to do a little map for the second case of my series.
You wanted to see the results, so here is mine:

I think this was a great idea! I made two versions of the Wonder Bar with it, showing two different times in my fanfic chapter, Turnabout Shock.

Wonder Bar map 2.png
Wonder Bar map 2.png (6.61 KiB) Viewed 11939 times
The (T) is Trucy, the (K) is the killer, the (V) is Suzan Prize, the victim, the (C) and (W) are my two witnesses, Charles Edwin-Ocscar and Harvey Wallbanger. The (M) is a mannequin, which is extremely important in the case.
Do they look good? (=3)

I think those look AWESOME.
The only issue I have is that there's way too much green.
Check out this thread: http://www.aceattorney.sparklin.org/for ... =28&t=4090 to see how the witness colours usually work :)

Should've did it this way instead of the way I did it in my trial... won't bother to change it though. I'll keep this in mind for next case, though~ :D

Hey, it's preety neat, don't worry about it ;)
You should just recolor the characters letters to white.
Oh, and BTW, you made the letters outline perfectly! :D
