With the same trial file, I use both Chrome (Win7) and Firefox 29.0.1 (Win8), and I don't think it's ever breached 300MB for me.
I would be interested in seeing if you can load similar trials... Though, try loading this trial in Firefox Safe Mode (which is now apparently under Help -> Restart with add-ons disabled) - it might be an extension that's interfering or something. Also, you mentioned something about antivirus, could that be killing it?
