Morganwk's sprites (use with permission I guess)

Post by morganwk »

Here is Rick O'Shay, a secret agent in the upcoming trial, Turnabout Secret Agent.
Image
He will have more poses, but this stuff is really hard to do fast.
His suit jacket is franken'd from Butz and Grossberg, his head shape is from Redd White, hair is original, eyes are very heavily tweaked from Wellington, nose is from Gumshoe I think, and I shrunk it. He is modelled after Daniel Craig's James Bond, but it doesn't look much like him IMHO.

Here is an extension to Bruce Goodman using Gant's coat, the official art, and my intuition and interpolation skills.

Here is David, a work in progress for Ethan Honor: Ace Attorney by Ghostly Banette.
Image
The hair is, obviously, Gumshoe's.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is a new pose for Luke Atmey, "requested" by Detective Luke Atmey. (I made the wrong sprite after misinterpreting his request.)
Image

The pose is supposed to look like
Spoiler : :
Matt Engarde's mental breakdown pose.

That's it so far.

Eyebrows?
I think he looks fine without them..
I might add them, but I don't know what shape.

Profile made!

How should I go about making the face more AA'ish? It looks flat and unshaded, but I don't know what to do about it.

OK, I know this is your first sprite and all, but don't expect me to take any prisoners with my critique:
Spoiler : :
Let's start with the good:

Especially for a first try, your frankenspriting concept is great. Merging Grossberg's suit with Larry's jacket is a great idea.

And now the bad:

Your inexperience definitely shows in all other aspects, though. One noticeable thing is that you haven't changed the shading on the parts you sprited in from Grossberg to match Larry's jacket, which causes a really weird and sharp change of shadow in the middle.

Another thing is about the tie. I'm relatively sure you just stretched out his shirt/tie, using Paint.net if I'm not mistaken. That's never a good idea. It distorts the pixels with antialias. The best thing to do is split it halfway, separate it so that it fits, and then fill in the blanks.

Next, regarding the face. The reason it looks flat and unshaded is because you used far too light a colour on the nose, mouth, and eyes. Change them to a darker shade. Following that, shade around them, preferably using the same colour you originally used on them.

Next up... you're missing a lot of small detail in places. There appear to be empty gaps around his neck, his ears, where his shoulders and the collar connect, and in parts of his eyes. I'd advise filling them all in. In the case of the ears, fill them in by adding two or three extra layers of pixels on the border of his hair.

Hopefully this should fix all of your problems.

Thanks for the help. I think I'll work on fixing it tomorrow.

And I used GIMP.

Also, totally random suggestion, but how about Rico instead of Rick O'?

Rick sounds more like a spy name than rico. But that would work better if he weren't a secret agent.

Edit:
Improvements made! And a talk animation. Please give me feedback so I know what to fix before I move on.

Definitely an improvement, but still definitely needs work. I'm not sure changing the arms was really a good idea. His positioning now just looks really awkward.

The darkest shade in his facial features should ideally be the same colour as his outline.

Also, now that they're more visible, it's much clearer that his facial features are very badly proportioned, and... well, just poorly-drawn, as harsh as it sounds. More than anything, I'd suggest frankenspriting a different nose/mouth/eyes set onto him, but if you definitely don't want to do that, it still needs a fair bit of work. I'd advise re-doing them, and paying close attention to how they're sprited on some canon characters when doing so, to get a feel for the structure.

Also, the timing and sequencing on the talk animation is very off. I'd advise checking some canon sprites to see what the timing is like on them. Several details also change between the talking and still sprites.
