Super Dangan Ronpa 0.2: Atop the High Seas of Despair [Ch. 1

Post by enigma »

Prologue

Beautiful Days

Image
Hopes Peak Academy. The school that takes only the absolute top students of their field. Success here means guaranteed success in life.

Image
Only those who have truly mastered their skill are even permitted entry to this prestigious academy. Coming here is the dream and envy of so many people worldwide that it's almost ridiculous.

Image
And now you too stand at it's gate. One of the accepted students. You've worked diligently and mastered your craft. And now, behind this gate lies your destiny. Just what does fate have in store...

Image
...Or not. It looks like right now the Hopes Peak bus has arrived. It seems the very first day of your new life at Hopes Peak Academy is going to begin with a field trip.

As the bus shudders gently, driving across gravel roads, you start to fall into a deep and heavy sleep...
Chapter 1: Normal Days

Theater

Beautiful Dead

Mm... The seats on the bus are soft. And the way it rocks gently is so soothing. You slowly crack open your eyes, only to find your not on the bus at all. In fact, if you didn't know any better you could swear that you can hear the ocean. You rub your eyes. You seem to be sitting in a red velvet seat. Very plush, very comfortable. It wraps around your body. Your arms lay on the arm rests. Around you are other students in various states of consciousness. They too, are in chairs similar to the one you sit in. You look in front of you and from side to side. The chairs all form rows going down towards a wooden stage at the bottom. On either side of the rows are carpeted stairs with little lights shining from them. It seems that you're in a theater of some kind. Though, the lights are on and the curtain is down so it seems that whatever the show is it hasn't begun yet.

Suddenly, a crackling emerges from an intercom on the sides of the ceiling.

"Upupupu~ This is your captain speaking. We will be having a presentation shortly. Until then, make yourselves at home. The doors are locked for your convenience, for the record. So don't bother trying to leave."

With a second crackle it finally dies. It looks like your stuck here for now.

Spoiler : Theater :
Tsuyotoko Osuji rubbed his head, wondering just what the meaning of that message was... the speech resembled a scheming villain in an action film, more than it resembled a captain. But he decided to put his fears aside for now. Osuji looked around the room, standing up to announce his presence.

"Hello, everyone? My name is Tsuyotoko and Osuji, and... does anyone here have some coffee? It fits a hero of justice like me very poorly to be low on energy at a time like this!"

Up... Down... Up... Down...

He wasn't sure if that was his stomach or the world around him as his eyes cracked open, after what seemed like an endless dream to him. Sigmund tried looking around him, but all his green eyes could catch were red blurs. The buzzing in his ears drowned the distant traces of, what he assumed, were the other students. Nausea and the buzzing... Hm, this seemed like all of his mornings, actually. He blinked a few times, desperately trying to catch a clear image. Had he fallen asleep on the bus? Damn. That was bad. That was really bad. How long was he out? He needed to ask someone what time it was. ...Aah, if only he had remembered what time the bus'd actually picked them up. He didn't really have anyone to really blame but himself for not knowing that... and the broken blue watch around his hand, that is.

The world was still spinning, but his senses were slowly coming back to him. And they were all telling him one thing: Something's wrong here.
Instead of the back-breaking chair he'd found himself sitting before, this one felt surprisingly comfortable and warm. Instead of the screeching of the back wheels, a pleasant and soothing silence lingered in the room. ...If only for a moment. He could've sworn he heard another voice - this time one a bit closer to him...? Instead of having his face pressed against the cold window glass he'd most surely have woken up to, he found himself forced to hold it in the palm of his right hand, in fear that it might just fall off and land between his feet.
But... Most importantly, he told himself as he fully returned to the conscious world and witnessed the almost dream-like scene before him, buses don't get about fifty feet wide and turn into a theater... right?

He stretched his arm out to the red seat in front of him, awkwardly wrapping it around its top and attempted to pull himself forward. But as felt the lack of support from his feet, he immediately pushed himself away, back into the comfortable embrace of his own chair.
"Okay, then... No walking, I guess.", he mumbled under his breath.

Just... don't throw up... yet, at least, he ordered himself.

He took another look around him, trying to catch a glimpse of the other students. One of them was apparently standing up... but he couldn't quite make out their appearance.
The buzzing had finally stopped completely, as he'd finally managed to make out the words that were apparently coming from the student's mouth.

"I... *Yawn*... I don't really see the waiter, do you?"
...Assuming they had any in theaters.
Spoiler : GM :
And then, allmost like thunder it struck him.

They're... they're still here, right...?
Sigmund decided to use what energy he had in his arms and searched his pockets.

Awakening from her slumber, Hazuki Shiraki's first action was to wonder where the hell she was. She tried doing her best to remember everything that had happened. Let's see... Hope's Peak... A bus trip... The sound of the ocean... A weird theater thing... Hm. Maybe she was still asleep, and going back to sleep within her dream would cause her to wake up somehow. Yeah, sure, that made sense... Or it would if she was in some kind of bizarre movie made by conspiracy theorists. Maybe it was time to come up with a few more realistic ideas and work from there.

That voice from the intercom sounded kind of cartoon-like, in a way. And clearly doing his best to seem intimidating, despite sounding like he was from a cartoon... Oh, crap. This was a field trip to one of those weird places with cheesy mascots, wasn't it? Those were usually filled with people... Then again, the voice had also said the doors were locked, meaning her class would be afforded some privacy, if nothing else. Something about this whole situation still didn't feel right, but Hazuki was still too tired to think very clearly.

... Well, whatever. First of all, she wanted to make sure she still had everything with her. Let's see... She still had her gloves. That was good. The design was always something she was fond of. A mix of black and white, alternating between the two colours for the fingers. She was wearing the outfit she usually wore, so nothing was amiss there. But now she needed to focus on the important thing... Her violin case. But first of all...

"Merde... I'm going to have to actually talk with the others soon, won't I?" Hazuki whispered to herself. She considered herself terrible at talking to other people. There was no doubt in her mind that she was going to mess something up... Oh well, she'd just have to do her best.

Speaking of which, maybe it would be good to answer that 'Tsuyotoko' person, even if she found the question kind of ridiculous. Someone else had already responded, but she might as well respond too...

"You seem to have plenty of energy to me... Do you really need more?" Hazuki replied. This Actor definitely seemed much more energetic than her, at least.

Hazuki looks around for her violin case.

Ryuunosuke slowly opened his eyes. It took a few seconds for the fuzziness in his mind to disappear.
As he slowly realized what just happened, his eyes looked around to assess the situation.
No, this definitely wasn't their bus. Yes, that definitely just sounded like someone kidnapped them.
Really?
He instinctively clenched his fists. This definitely had to be the doing of one of them again. Those damn usual suspects.
I bet it's Alfred. That Alfred guy NEVER learns his lesson. He's also the only one who'd be crazy enough to-
His thought stopped. As his eyes were darting about, he realized there were too many other people here. Somehow it was weird that they'd capture all of them, but not impossible.
With some effort, he managed to relax his fists again. This was certainly bad, but not that bad. For one, his brother seemed to be here as well and safe. This should go down the usual road, and then it's straight back to regular school business.

He reached for his gun, checking if it's still there.

Chouko

Chouko stared. Why was she staring? Because she had no intention of moving, no intention of speaking, she was fine just sitting there and letting whatever happened happen. Why should she move when there was nothing going on her for her to move to, nothing for her to say. She was sure no one wanted her to say anything anyway, she was quite boring, and probably wouldn't even interest anyone who had been moving around, nope, not at the least. She would just sit here, and stare at whatever was in front of her.

Ah, but what if that was a bad idea? What if the idea was to make her sit there, and then someone would come out and yell at her for being incompetent, and then she'd have to punish herself? She supposed she had no idea about how that would work, unfortunately, but it worked well enough to make her get up and look around... There were people scattered about it seemed. She supposed she would just wait until one of them came to her, after all, she didn't get along with people that well, and it probably wouldn't help her in this situation just yet.

She started replaying calming songs in her head, at least calming for her, and decided to take a look around, after all, she had no idea where she was, how she got there, or anything really important. Chouko was as in danger as she could be, since she was usually safe, there was no real reason for anyone to think she was in obvious danger, she was with a group of people, so what could go wrong! This whole set of thought was completely ridiculous, but she tended to go one long speeches in her own mind, so she didn't mind, especially since she didn't talk to people.

What would be the best place to look...? She supposed it was best to look at her own person first, and then under her seat. She did so, social interaction could wait till later.
Spoiler : GM Notes :
Chouko patted down her body looking for anything suspicious, and then kneels down and checks under her seat.

For some reason, Katsurou dreamt about capybaras. Not that he complained about it, he liked those creatures. They just fascinated him. Then things took a turn for the strange when he began to frolic with them in a field of cream puffs. Fortunately, he woke up before things could get weirder.

At least, for the dream.

His eyes weren't immediately open, but something felt off. What had he been doing? He remembered boarding a bus, that much was clear to him. What had he been doing on a bus? Oh, that's right. He was invited to Hope's Peak Academy. Apparently they were supposed to go on a field trip on the first day. So, he was still on the bus.

But that didn't feel right. His seat was far too comfortable, no bus could be this soft and relaxing; there was an evident swaying motion to the whole place. Like the gentle rocking of a cradle. More than that, he could hear the faint sound of an ocean within wherever he was. It was clear, either the bus had fallen off a bridge and into the sea, somehow managing to stay afloat... or more simply, he was on a boat.

"Ugh... what happened?" he quietly muttered to himself as he adjusted his position in his seat. Looking at the dozens of chairs around him, he could see he was in a theater, and he wasn't alone either. There were silhouettes of other people among the chairs. 15 other people to be precise... How exactly did they get here? It would take a lot of effort to carry 16 students from a bus and place them in their own seats in a theater. Judging by their movements, Katsurou could sense that everyone else was disoriented. Clearly something was up here. He was starting to miss his strange dream, at least he knew what was going on there despite the sheer randomness of it. In this dark theater right now, there was a feeling of the unknown. He didn't like not knowing what was going on. For all he knew, a bear could pop up out of nowhere and start dancing in a swimsuit while juggling fish.

That was when the intercom sounded, informing everyone that there would be a presentation shortly. And that the doors were locked. Great, looks like he was stuck here for now. People began to talk around him; he didn't exactly know anyone in this theater, so he'd probably end up talking to someone sooner or later. First, he had to have a sense of direction. Or sense of time at least.

He feels his pockets for his pocket watch, hoping to see what time it is.
Spoiler : GM Notes :
Aha! So this is the fabled GM Spoiler Tag! Such mystery...
Katsurou also checks to see what he has on him besides his watch.

Spoiler : Dave :
You have nothing suspicious on you, or in you, or so forth.

Underneath your seat, you find a few dust bunnies. But that seems to be it.
Spoiler : Alnar :
Your pocket watch is still in your pocket. All safe and sound... Except for the fact that it's no longer ticking and the hadns aren't moving. It seems to be broken.

On you, you find:
-Your eyeglasses. Those are on your face, though.
- A shiny silver coin
- An extra pair of eyeglasses
- A handheld tape recorder

Chouko

Hm, seems like there was nothing important there, she didn't mind, she might have found a venomous monster or something, who knows. It was best to assume that it was fine that there was nothing underneath her seat just yet. She looked around, and decided to remain silent, these people probably wouldn't appreciate her voice just yet, so she would keep it zipped shut for a while it seemed. There was worse ways to handle herself being in a strange situation. She could be screaming FIRE in the theater, which would cause mass chaos, but that was a bad idea.

She stared at a wall.

Taking naps was a luxyry Ai had never allowed herself to do. Sleep was an important part of studying and therefore, she liked keeping her sleep schedules consistent. She fell asleep the second her head hit the pillow and woke up automatically every day at the same time. Therefore, Ai felt the utmost confusion as she regained her conciousness. What's more, she was actually feeling groggy and slightly nauseous, something that was never supposed to happen unless she was sick. Yes, a sickness was the most likely explanation for her state.

It was only then she started looking around, though it was hard to see because of the darkness. To her surprise, the other people in the room didn't seem to be doing so well either. In fact, some of them weren't even conscious. Why would they all suddenly collapse in a bus at the same time? All Ai could think of were some ridiculous conspirancy theories about sleeping gas and whatnot. She dismissed them from her mind, though a some kind of medicine would explain the nausea... Maybe this was some new form of hazing?

Only the thought about hazing made her realize that she was, or at least supposed to be, at school. This made her somewhat nervous. She had never had terribly good experiences with schools... It felt like all they did was throw her around from a class to another as if she was merely a sack of potatoes. Then there were these people around her that she assumed to be her new classmates. She would have to get along with them. The thought made her slightly uncomfortable, as Ai had always favored company of the adults. Being always forced to change classes had not exactly been a good foundation for long term friendships... Besides, she had hardly even talked to anyone of her age for two years. Ai was fairly confident she would be able to communicate sufficiently, she just wasn't sure if she was able to befriend them. You were supposed to be friends with your classmates in high school, right? It didn't help that she was most likely older than everyone else. Ai sighed. She would just have to... adjust.

She took another look around to see what these people looked like. Some of them were already talking. Ai grimaced at Osuji's overly enthuastic introduction. Enthuasm wasn't exactly a bad thing in her books, but she didn't think she could ever match the level of energy. That's why she found herself smiling at the comments that followed.

Ai was a bit worried though. While people talking seemed to be well enough (even if a little nauseous) and she could catch a glimpse of movement on her right, what about the others? She hoped that the people who had brought them here, had had the sense of checking everyone's allergies before using the sleeping gas. Ai wasn't allergic to anything herself, but it didn't mean there others weren't. She decided to go check on them and carefully stood up. Gently she shook the nearest unconscious student to get them wake up.

Naota's consciousness slowly returned to him. Even before he opened his eyes he could feel that he was in an unknown chair. He could hear other people moving about, and talking a little bit. Slowly, he opened his eyes--not that anyone else could tell. He scanned the location as best as he could with his peripheral vision. Naota was in some sort of theater, with over a dozen other teenagers.

Well, this was certainly different.

Naota would have to ask Raven what in the world she was thinking. ...Assuming she was the one behind all this, at least. Naota kept trying to think back to how he got here, but everything after entering that bus was just a blank.

He heard some of the other people talking about... coffee? Perhaps (for whatever reason) they knew more than him, and it was only his memory that was impaired... When waking up in an unknown location surrounded by strangers, the first thing one would ask for is most likely not coffee. It seemed like he was not in any direct immediate danger; he would have been killed in his sleep if that were the case. Still, if the others know more, it probably isn't a bad idea to pretend to be asleep for a bit longer and merely observe...

Katsurou felt the could touch of metal as he reached into his pocket, but it was a familiar shape. He took his pocket watch out and looked at it. Gold, from the casing down to the chain, just like his eyes. It gave off a faint shimmer even in the shadows of the theater. However, as soon as he opened it, he frowned. It was stuck at 9:54, and upon closer inspection it looked like it was broken.

"Bummer... I guess I'll have to get this fixed again." he said as he sighed. At least he still had it on him. The watch was something he'd hold onto just to reassure himself. It may not be able to tell time right now, but at least it still gave him some sense of direction, however odd that may sound for a watch. Katsurou felt his coat, whoever had put him here at least didn't seem to have stolen anything from him. He still had his extra pair of eyeglasses, in case the ones he was currently wearing should disappear for whatever reason. And to go with his shiny gold pocket watch was his ever reliable shiny silver coin. Just by finding these things, he felt a little less stressed.

Now, what to do? Wait for this presentation to occur? More people were starting to move in this theater, sooner or later everyone would be awake. Maybe he should speak up, that could relieve some tension that was building up.

"First day of school and everyone fell asleep on the bus? That doesn't sound so promising."
