Well after playing this, I have to say...
Spoiler : :
I...I’m kind of conflicted. I mean on one hand, seems like jumping the shark, even for Ace Attorney, but on the other hand, I liked the way it was presented. I think. The last alien sprite didn’t show up for me so...

Did their sprites appear at all? Or did only one pose fail to appear? I don't know if I'll be able to fix this in time...

That's odd... did you allow sounds and images to load completely before starting/picking your save file? I'm on Firefox and the game freezes until the images load, so if it's broken links I might just re-upload and replace the sprites.
Spoiler : Just to be clear :
This is the alien. He's not appeared at all?Image

Now that the case has been reviewed I've proof read some parts I missed, and added a little more dialogue to make the less obvious examine and present choices more clear.

After finding out how well this case did in the 'Setting the Stage' competition, I've got to check this one out.

Some 'stream of consciousness' musings follow.
Spoiler : :
Sector 3DS? :)

I would think Phoenix would have a DVD player. And I would think that, as popular as the Steel Samurai series and its related shows are, they'd be available on DVD and/or Blu-Ray. Not to mention other methods. Fact is, if I ever ended up traveling via dimensional portal to the Ace Attorneyverse, I'd certainly purchase a DVD boxed set of the Steel Samural series to take back as a souvenir. :)

Ah, yes. It happens with every popular show, from just about every genre. Fans might introduce a show they love to one who hasn't had a chance to see it, only to accidentally give out a spoiler.

Hmm. French accent. Is this a new character or someone we've seen before?

Ah, well if Alice Cartting has appeared in any prior fancases by the same author, I've yet to play them. Hopefully there will be enough info so I'll understand what she's about even if I haven't.

Kind of an abrupt transition from the Mario-esque 'Interesting People' from AAI-1 to the investigation music from the first AA game.

Nice shoutout to the defendant from 'Turnabout Storyteller' in SoJ. :)

Ellie's an interesting character. Quite a large vocabulary.

And we've got a Psyche-lock already. Before we even have any evidence of any crime yet. Interesting.

But it's not our business to pry ... yet Off to the race.

Ray Sing, Bow Ting... :)

Hmm... more junk in Alice's boat? What's going on?

Uh oh... looks like her competitor has had an accident.

And now we have our mystery, and several people to talk to.

Norma DePlume. From the orca case. That was a fun one.

Uh oh. Alice is being blamed for the accident.

Ah, Ema. She pretty much knows how things go.

Well, I'm pretty sure Alice didn't mean to throw the junk at Uki's boat, but the prosecution can probably still make a case for reckless endangerment, I suppose.

At least Norma's going to help us. A submarine? Sounds like it'll be really handy in this case.

Well, we needed to find all the evidence we could get on land first, but now we're at the submarine. Ah, got to remember how this sub works.

Technically, it's not a UFO if it's underwater. It's a ... UUWO? Unidentified Underwater object?

Indeed, where's Lotta Hart when we need her. :lotta: I was half expecting her to have shown up by now.

Yeah, Phoenix's phone definitely needs an upgrade. His type of phone was considered old back when 'Heroes' and 'Desperate Housewives' were the hot shows on TV.

Okay, taking a look around. Shouldn't there be a 'Missing junk piece added to the record' message in green text, accompanied by a jingle sound effect at this point?

So now we're in the Unidentified Floating Object, or whatever. Anyway, yes it looks pretty much like a stereotypical sci-fi set.

Okay, so now we have to answer questions to get past the door. Strange questions. Having to guess a hair color? Not all the questions are about hair, though. Still strange...

Hmm. How well do Phoenix and Maya know Alice, anyway?

Ah, Ema geeks out at the control room. But we get a map of the ship anyway.

And now we meet someone who may or may not be an alien. And he has Psyche-locks.

Seems like Phoenix and Maya don't know much about Alice, after all. What was that previous case like, anyway?

Uh oh. Looks like this guy doesn't want us to leave.

Fortunately, help has arrived and we're able to escape. But who was in the cell? Is it the mssing Uki?

So we're going to the trial. Will any of what we've found out here be of any help in the trial?

Well, we'll just have to wait and see.

So where does this version of 'Fragrance of Dark Coffee come from'? I'm not sure I've heard this one before.
Well, this is a fun little case. I hope we get to see the trial soon.

Glad you enjoyed the case so far!
Spoiler : some responses :
- I thought that because Nick never upgraded his phone or computer, his media player in the office would still be an old VCR XD I'm sure Maya owns them all on DVD/Blu-Ray (and even the elusive HD-DVD)

- There should be some green text with a note that the Missing Junk Piece was added to the Court Record. Gotta fix that up.

- Alice's relation to Phoenix and Maya will be explained (She's not appeared in prior fan cases, but the mention of them meeting at the airport is a hint at a future flashback (LOL those words shouldn't be next to each other)

- That remix of Godot's theme is one of the fan-made remixes the AAO trial editor offers.

So, I played through this case, and... Well, not what I expected. I stumbled across a few minor bugs, so I'll prepare a list for you later this week, along with my other thoughts. I liked the case, but it took me a while to get a feel for what the case was trying to be, so I think I'll like it more on a second playthrough.

Thanks for playing! And yes, any bugs you found, please share!

Spoiler : :
What I mean by not what I expected:

This game isn't interested in justifying its setting. For instance, in the finale of SoJ, you are in a foreign country, trying to win a murder trial under penalty of death and need to depose the queen to do so. SoJ takes several steps to justify all this: the previous queen was widely believed to murdered by a defense attorney, the current queen is abusing her absolute authority to try and stop you because exposing her misdeeds is essential for you to solve the case, and you're in this country because of the ties to Dhurke and Kurain Village... Assailant, by contrast, puts minimal effort into such justifications. Oh, Norma dePlume wants to see us, and now we're in a submarine, and there's an alien spacecraft which we're now going to investigate. The game makes some effort to justify this, but none of it is convincing. This game just wants to have Phoenix dealing with aliens because it makes for an interesting setting.

There's nothing inherently wrong with that, but it was jarring at first and took a bit of getting used to.

I was giving the game another playthrough today and I was reminded of one other thing I meant to say: how is Alice an "old friend" of Phoenix and Maya? I couldn't get a good feel for how close they were during the case, but it seemed similar to Phoenix and Maya's friendship with Maggey Byrde.

Some miscellaneous presentation notes. I'll have more later:
* The timestamps in an unusual format. Compare to the canon games to see how they do it.
* Frame 12: It strikes me as strange to end a frame on a comma. I prefer ending on ellipses, as the canon games do. For exampl:
I understand you're back from Khu'rain... ...but do you need to marathon the Steel Samurai in my office?
* Frame 16: Yeah, this
* Frame 856: There's a random space right before Athena's "HEY"
* I don't have the frame number, but just after that, "Sorry" shouldn't be capitalized. It's not the first word of the sentence.
* Maybe there's a reason for this, but why is Alice calling her "Mystic" Maya?
* Frame 1555: Why is "Trade Secret" capitalized and on its own line?
* Frame 1572: This timestamp is formatted differently from both the canon and the last timestamp.

Ahh fair point. And I’ll fix those mistakes!
Spoiler : In response (Part 1 and future spoilers) :
I admit, justifying the setting wasn’t a priority for Investigation Day 1. Most of that SoJ backstory comes out in Case 5, and with this, I kinda planned some reveals to take place as turnabouts in the trial.
But what we did explain was that Norma is writing a biography on Vicyl, hence her apprentice being present at the race. Alice meets up with Phoenix and Maya at the airport as they return from Khura’in (which is intended to be expanded upon). The alien in the UFO explains their presence on Earth is to collect paint as it’s a psychedelic. The identity of Alice is still left unsolved as of yet and Ellie’s psyche locks will also be explained later.

Hmm, I don't think what I said was quite what I meant.
Spoiler : :
There are two things that nag at me.
1. Phoenix being able to get on a submarine. Norma was there, but Phoenix going to see her without a strong reason and Norma being willing and able to give him access to a submarine strikes me as a little too convenient.
2. Phoenix being willing to investigate an alien spacecraft with just himself and Ema.

I'm fine with the rest, but I'll go into more detail later. I've got to head off for a while.
