Umineko sucks. It's cliche. You should watch Twilight.

Umineko no Naku Koro Ni

Post by Mimi »

This sound novel is astounding. It really deserves the title "sound" instead of "visual" because the music is on par with the awesomeness of its story. Everything is so original and mind-hurting.

Basic Summary of the Story
Spoiler : :
The Ushiromiya family is deadly rich. The head of the family, Ushiromiya Kinzo is about to die however. His friend, a doctor suspects his death will occur not too late, about the time when the family conference arrives. But Kinzo, a wise yet crazy man at the same time wishes nothing more than to see this mysterious "Beatrice" before his death.

Fast forward to the conference. The entire family comes to visit the island for the discussion of who gets Kinzo's vast fortune, which is rumored to be weighed in many gold bars. The 8 adults (Krauss and Natsuhi, Eva and Hideyoshi, Ryudolf and Kyrie, and Rosa) are debating about the topic day and night, while the cousins (George, Jessica, Battler, and Maria) are reunited happily. Things are good and bad. But then, suddenly, a hurricane traps all of the people (including the servants and the doctor) onto the island.

Worse of all, deaths are occurring. And strangely enough, all these deaths seemed to be connected to the epitaph that Kinzo had made in front of a portrait that claims to depict the true ruler of the island, the Golden Witch Beatrice. And all these deaths are a ritual to revive her...

Is it a mystery? Is it a fantasy? Is Beatrice real? Or is this simply revenge or a cold string of murders for the many gold bars that Kinzo has...?
:) Cool, yeah? Now start talking about the theories, because I want to know the TRUTH! :fran:

That link is just to the site containing a translation patch so you'll still need to get the actual game. I've only read the first 4 chapters so far, and stopped midway through the 5th chapter due to other things taking up my time slots. I've also watched the anime too as well. While not that good due to a lot of missing things, it isn't that bad either. However, a lot of Umineko fans will not acknowledge the anime's existence though. I still like Higurashi's story more, but the story and soundtrack of this one is really good.

For those who don't know, the reason why it's labeled as a sound novel instead of a visual novel is because it puts more focus on the audio to deliver the mood of the story than the visuals.

By the way, it appears that Alchemist, the company that ported Higurashi to the PS2, will be porting the first arc of this for the PS3 (Which I doubt we'll ever see a localization of, but not all hope is lost yet). Here's some youtube links:

PS3 ver. Opening: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXvdVkP5iAE

As much as I like the song in the PS3 version's opening, I still think the song from the original opening is the best.

But you have to buy it to download. There's also a DVD version, but you have to pay as well.

Oh and I have the links about the PS3 version in my sig if anyone wants to sign up to help get Umineko to come not just to Japan.

The games are also pretty cheap as I've heard because they're doujin games.

Still... WHY HAVEN'T I BOUGHT IT? I AM A DISGRACE TO THE UMINEKO FANBASE!

Oh well, one of these days... one of these days. Either way, the soundtrack is pretty worth it anyway. :awesome:

As for the anime, I actually liked it until I checked out the sound novel. Then I began to deny the existence of it. *already has the demo*

Well, this game is only for a very specific audience, like all visual/sound novels.
I really wouldn't recommend it to someone who expects interactivity, it isn't a "game" in that sense. (though there are rumors that the final arc will contain some choices, but those are only rumors.)

And it's totally confusing. You can play the first 3 arcs and still have no idea what's going on. Really, if you hate getting confused... Final warning, that first arc is trying to lure you in... it will only get worse from there...

As for me, I like all this mystery-detective-stuff and I also like some confusion. (yes, I enjoyed the ending of Evangelion, for example. xD)
So this is really one of my favourite "games".

I'd post some theories here but I don't want to spoiler anyone...

Edit: PS: An Umineko-Anime? Don't look for it. It doesn't exist!

True, the anime really was bad compared to the novel... even though I'm only speaking from experience of one sound novel.

As for confusing stuff... I like being confused, okay?

This is meant to be kinetic novel so I doubt the final episode will feature branching paths/choices to make.
