[T] Max Jefht: Ace Attorney ●●○○○

Post by Jofe »

Max Jefht: Ace Attorney is a series whose production started in 2014 and was released between May 2019 and July 2022 in the french section. And finally, I can start to release it in the English section now. The idea back then was to try to replicate the 3DS formula (it was still fresh and new in 2014).

Image

In Max Jefht: Ace Attorney, you play as Max Jefht, an experienced defense attorney considered as a prodigy. Throughout this series, his convictions will be put to the test. Have no doubt, however, that he takes his job very seriously.

This series introduces some unusual gameplay for the classic formula, since there is Logic from Ace Attorney Investigations. It also introduces original gameplay like Compare during the cross-examinations, or also the "Cross-Examination Break" which appears starting from Episode 2.

Also starting from Episode 2, this series will use full custom 3D models as backgrounds and also have a full custom UI. Hope you will like it.

The series will feature five cases when it will be completely done. Click on the picture of released cases will load the first part of the case.

FAQ

Q: Does this series spoil the main series?
A: Outside music, no. The series has absolutely no link whatsoever with official AA games. No character outside the Judge appears, and it's an alternate version of the Judge from another timeline.

Q: Does this series have sensitive content?
A: Yes, kinda. Obviously not in a graphic way (it's not MadWorld, Zero Escape or Danganronpa, don't worry if these scare you, i don't want to be banned anyway). But some harsh themes will be treated.... because, well, it's murders and everything you know. You can see a list of content warnings below in spoilers, but there are not in order and I even include subjets treated very lighly so you can't be completely sure what will happen next.
Spoiler : :
Murders (obviously), sometimes blood (but not a huge amount), animal abuse, child abuse (I include all people until 18 in child category), sectarism, suicide, harassment... Some of them are just evoked by characters, but I listed them anyway
Q: Are some features missing?
A: The first two episodes were released before fades were a thing on AAO, sorry for the inconvenience.

Q: I found bugs and/or typos.
A: Sorry for that. Just list them and I will correct them as soon as I can.

Q: A lot of content doesn't seems to load
A: Unfortunately, it's propably a host issue. Most of the time it's temporary, but it's still annoying. The only two advices I can give to you is either to try later, or just try with another browser.

people really should check this case out, it's very well made. It has great characters and the case is quite interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of them translated.

I have played the first case, and I have some comments:
Spoiler : :
When I see 3 hours of gameplay, I was intrigued about the format since it's the second longest first case-series that I have rememberred until now, after CoC. The first few scenes are bangers. The countdown of bomb until the explosion really hooks me. After that we go to the investigation part. The investigation section is mostly AA. Before delving into the crime itself, I notice that you didn't include any introductions to the protagonists. I personally feel that it might be better if you have, although we can piece some of the parts of the introduction in the other parts of the investigations. I like how you emulate the DS setting into the move section rather than using the AAO default. There are not much optional presents, but the way that they are handled is, OK-ish? I'm not sure whether to prefer your method or the default one, since I always loving the optional presents. But I understand that there weren't many people to talk to, so yeah. One thing that I also note is the logic system, which is something that I really bad on. There is one problem though, which after correctly connecting the 2 logics, somehow there is one of them stuck at the bottom(iirc the second piece logic) part, so I had to go back and enter the logic again, which somehow fixed it. I suppose that's because the variable check only happened after the Logic button? I am not sure since I haven't meddled with the editor at all so can't say whether this can be fixed or not. Rather than that, I don't seem to find many errors in terms of presentation and grammar(although I have to admit, I am really weak at reviewing those 2). About the case itself, it's a bit complicated for the first case(since we have to deal with 4 separate things which for other case makers could be about at least 5 hours already). I am surprised that given the smoothness, the investigation part took me about 1,25-1,5 hours already, and wondering how long the trial could be.

For the trial itself, I took the liberty of checking the total of frames, which is close to 5000 already. Reflecting back, I was surprised that I can finish this part in about 2 hours. I admit that I had 1-2 breaks in between, or my brain couldn't work properly. The pace itself, I can't put my hand on it. The amount of material is so many, yet the pacing is borderline between too fast and not(probably leaning towards the too fast). The logic is between easy and medium for me, since I was able to deduce Adaver to the bomber after seeing the crime scene(although you have to ruin it by opening it in the investigation rather than in the CE), albeit I didn't see the edited floor plans(which should have opened the entire secret floor easily), and the hole in the blooded beanie(for this one, I think it's better if you acknowledge that there is a hole in it in text, because it's seems weird that this is not mentioned at all(or I forgot?)). For the secret passage tricks, I think your explanation on the blue key evidence is the same as the gray key, which is incorrect, because it's found in the victim's locker. The other parts of the logic are fine, although I still confuse on why the fingerprint is not decisive enough(but I have to admit that I forgot to consider the possibility of the twin/one person only, which is actually a very great twist if I play this case way before). For the presentation part, I noticed so many typos, like lacking a space, and will(I forgot what did you write), and the most noticable is the Lown's name become Loun at the end(there are several like this, and I happened to see the full name that probably you used in the French section, but alas I forgot again - I never take notes when playing, so sorry for forgetting the exact frames).

Since I have been rambling about some of the aspects of the game, I want to praise for the characterization of the games. The banter between the main protagonist and his assistant is fantastic, ranging from the pizza part, the juvenile, and with her sister(which ironically re-hash the pizza part that I had almost forgotten but made me chuckle). The culprit is also brilliantly written, ranging from mischievous act, pranking, until the breakdown. For the crime itself, they are very ambitious for the first case, and somehow you glossed everything into 3-4 hours of gameplay, which I have mixed feelings. I personally would move this to second case and make it a bit longer and make another short case, although it will be weird that you already have 4 more cases and the length of gameplay are much higher.

In short, here are the problems that I face throughout the game:
1. (Optional) Might need to extend the trial portion.
2. Include introduction of the protagonists.
3. Logic part will be stuck after correctly choosing 2 pieces of logic. The description is the second part logic which supposed to be removed on screen still intact, and the first part logic still intact in the choices. This can be resolved with going back and re-enter the logic section.
4. If there are no mentions about the hole in the beanie, mention it in the evidence description.
5. Change the blue key description evidence.
6. Change Loun into Lown, especially in the latter parts of the trial. There is at least one instance of the incorrect full name, which should be Zack Lown.

kal0123456789 Thanks for playing!
Spoiler : :
Honestly, you're the first person to think that trial portion was too short. :XD: For the characters introductions, I mostly did the same thing than the official games with the character introducing himself in his mind. For the rest, we know their names, their jobs and we see their personality gradually, I think that's enough. The rest will be be introduced later, I think it's for the best.
There are not much optional presents, but the way that they are handled is, OK-ish? I'm not sure whether to prefer your method or the default one, since I always loving the optional presents.
Don't worry, you will be able to show your badge to everyone starting from Episode 2.
I probably messed up an action somewhere, I will try to fix this as soon as I can.
and the hole in the blooded beanie(for this one, I think it's better if you acknowledge that there is a hole in it in text, because it's seems weird that this is not mentioned at all(or I forgot?))
There is no hole involved with beanie. The only "hole" of the whole case is the bullet impact on the wall.
Other wise, I corrected the blue key description and the typos about Lown's name. Thanks for that.
necrogirl Thanks, I really appreciate it.

I played this. It was pretty good and even though a lot of the mystery flew over my head, I only had to use the guide like once. Great casemaking skills, Jofe. Max is so keeeewl.

Episode 2 is now out
Image

If you see any spelling errors, please point them out and I will correct them as quickly as possible. For sensitive content, take a look at the FAQ on the first post if you want to. Episode 2 is quite concerned by them. Links for each part and synopsis are also on the first post.

This episode is the first to feature the recurring prosecutor, detective and judge. So this is, in a way, the true beginning of the series now. Hope you will like all of them. This is also the first episode to feature the cross-examination BREAK, a "new" way to question the witnesses. And most importantly, this is the first episode where all backgrounds, without any exception, are custom. Really hope you will like them too. And you can present your badge to everyone, the most important feature obviously.

How come I'm only seeing this topic now? :hotti:

As Jofe's number one fan someone who played all 5 episodes in their French version, I highly recommend you to give these cases a try. As Jofe stated himself, episode 2 is really the starting point for the whole story.

Every episode is well thought out and well written, both in terms of the script and the (custom-made) characters (Hayden Fayce mvp).

One of my favourite series on this site!
Phileas Tempo : Ace Attorney

Finally got around to doing the 2nd case, another solid case. Nice to have a prosecutor who's not a jerk.
Spoiler : :
also interesting, that this episode is essentially two separate cases and there doesn't seem to be much relation between them until near the end. felt really sorry for the woman who was killed in the second case, seems like she had such a bright future only to have it cut short by that arsehole principle. Also the defendant in the 2nd case was such a humongous jerk I didn't feel the comfortable defending him in court but thankfully he got what was coming to him in the end.
Spoiler : :

what this is not getting more attention is beyond me, both the cases I have seen so far have been very high quality. I would like the point out though that there are a few lines in the 2nd episode which have not been translated, it doesn't break the plot, you can still understand what's going on, but it's something you might want to fix.

Max Jefht: Ace Attorney is, so far I think, one of the best series on the whole site.
