If previous Trybien/Spongesonic comp experience has taught me anything, it’s that the entries with reviews that don’t make any sense are the ones you’ve gotta watch out for. So far, that’s several of them, so this seems like it will be a fierce competition.

Spoiler : My response to the reviews of our case :
I am glad that (most of) the Judges enjoyed the experience and found some of the jokes funny. Each review gives a unique perspective, from the surprising praise, the anticipated response, and the realistic concerns (sorry for the poison).

We're not sure if there will be a public release or not due to how... specialised and injokey it is, but anyone who wants to play (after the ceremony) should be able to DM us to be added as a playtester. In regards to the presentation issues there will definitely be a major cleanup, especially that multiline one. Mildly annoyed that one was only discovered after the submission deadline and couldn't be fixed. Overall it was a lot of fun making this case just to roast Trybien relentlessly for threatening to shame us on the discord :jake: and not the full stress of a serious entry amongst a lot of external academic work.
Thrower of bricks.

Co-host of the Into the Takumi-verse case compeition.

Stuff I've made in 2 weeks:
The Impossible Turnabout
Erinaceinae Griminance

Cases I have collabed on:
Don't Resort to a Turnabout (W.I.P)
Trucy's Magical Catastrophe
That time I got reincarnated as a fictional Defence Lawyer in An Ace Attorney fangame and had to defend myself against incredibly unfair odds.

Stuff I've made by myself that is good:
...maybe in the future.

DBA is also incredibly based, and I couldn't have made this case without their help :larry:

The 27th Victory Day Parade or: Moving Forward Without Seeing
by Mirage Xel
Spoiler : Screenshot :
Image
Clearly administration doesn't own an air fryer (yet).
Spoiler : Synopsis :
Argyle and their friend Mitchell are having a debate about what patriotism means in a corrupt nation, but then someone dies at a parade.
Spoiler : Review :
Story: This entry is 5 minutes on account of Trybien pressuring Mirage to enter early, so there's not much to say. Kids, if a scary stranger comes in your dms asking you to submit early, you come run to me right away, okay?

Characters: This entry is 5 minutes on account of Trybien pressuring Mirage to enter early, so there's not much to say. Kids, if a scary stranger comes in your dms asking you to submit early, you come run to me right away, okay?

Presentation: I'm usually against meta, but the way this case does it is extremely interesting and I've never seen it done before. Mirage made the unorthodox choice not to send me the entry, instead opting to force me to watch a let's play of their entry instead. There's some narration, like another entry on this list, but it's much more natural as it's directly recorded by a human. They start off chipper, making some quirky comments, but immediately go dead quiet as the game starts right off with a political discussion. This cleverly emphasizes the discussion, as not much cases would start with material this heavy. The uncomfortable silence of the let's player is like the case saying "Yeah, that's right, we're starting off serious. Pay attention."

Despite the silence, the let's player, however, never lets their presence go unnoticed, as you can still hear them breathing in the background and there's a weird thumping noise present at points. Eventually, the let's player begins double clicking through the frames really fast to the point that I had to pause to read it, so I'll have to deduct points for that, even if it does cleverly reveal a glimpse into the let's player soul, showing that their tolerance on the length of political discussions in their fancases is about 4 minutes. But overall the presentation in this entry was extremely unique and charming.

Gameplay: No gameplay yet.

Theme Relevance: With the information provided so far, theme relevance is hard to ascertain. A cop shoots a protestor with his police-issued pistol, and there's something impossible about that for reasons not yet elaborated on.
Spoiler : Overall :
While the entry is extremely short and it can't be judged for theme relevance, it has a very unique way of telling its story and I will be sure to keep my eye on this case. The statement made on how different people react to different media is profound. The way that it can clue you in on how an observer of the case is feeling at any given moment is amazing, and I look forward to seeing what the story has to bring and what our unnamed observer's reaction to it will be.

Man, I guess he really didn’t want to talk about it…
Spoiler : Synopsis :
A prosecutor and detective wax philosophically about nationalism, a murder happens, then they wax philosophically about the nature of political prosecutions. This case was made for me!
Spoiler : Review :

Story: Sponge suggested I just fill this and the next review with “I’m Sorry’s”, but where is the fun in that? Mirage Xel had the courage to submit 100-ish frames without absolutely zero coercion. What we have here is my bread and butter, politics. I was so invested in what was being said that I kinda just zoned out and absorbed all of it. Man, I love politics.

Characters: We only get to know the player character and the detective he is talking to. They both have pretty big brains talking high concepts like politics, so I think they are cool.

Presentation: The presentation of philosophical ideas of nationalism is exactly what one would expect from someone who knows the true ins and outs of political philosophy, with a lot of words and no music. Truly felt like a real lecture, and I was thoroughly immersed.

Gameplay: I don’t know why there is a gameplay segment in this political philosphy review, this isn’t Socrates Jones.

Theme Relevance: The subject matter is also perfect for the theme since political prosecutions tend to get so bogged down with the need to convict in order to satiate the ravenous masses that the integrity of the investigation can be corrupted and the court can be kangaroo. There is a very good case that was released near the end of last year that handled similar themes, and since that one would have been very theme relevant for this comp, I am confident this one would have been as well.
Spoiler : Overall :
PROS
Big brain smart people discussions
CONS
May have gone on a little too long

Review: The Turnabout of the Curious Incident of the Train in the Night-Time
Entrants: skyem & spoonofdestiny

Note: This is a working title and may not be reflective of what the finished case is called.
Spoiler : Screenshot :
Image
Is this a typical Colorado road?
Spoiler : Synopsis :
A train car stops dead in the middle of the tracks... and the driver is found dead inside.
Spoiler : Review :
Story: Right now, the story is... very blatantly incomplete. There's not even enough here to get a good idea of what's going on besides "man is found dead in train car" and, by the looks of it, Athena will take the case. Beyond that, there's nothing much to really say.

Characters: There's not much here to get attached to at this moment. Dialogue is very minimal and a bit dry at the moment, likely due to the entry being unfinished in its current state. There's not much to say on this front either.

Presentation: The presentation of this demo is pretty rough. The assets are clearly unfinished, there's missing sprites and backgrounds, and there's minimal music and sound effects. This is very much an unfinished demo through and through.

Gameplay: There are two very unfinished investigation segments as of right now. One of them is not even properly coded to be finishable, and instead just has a debug option taking you back to the main menu. Overall, there's not much to say at the moment.

Theme Relevance: The Theme Relevance at this moment is pretty unclear. There's nothing at the moment that would suggest how impossible this crime really is.
Spoiler : Overall :
I don't have much to say about this demo beyond the interesting premise, because it hasn't gotten very far currently. I once again would like to apologize to skye and spoon for Try basically forcing you to submit something in such an unfinished state.

The Turnabout of the Curious Incident of the Train in the Night-Time by skyem & spoonofdestiny
Spoiler : Screenshot :
Image
This is absolutely terrifying. Train derailments hit a bit too close to home. I don’t care that Sponge used this first, I own this screenshot. My spongey friend will not be forgiven.
Spoiler : Synopsis :
An engineer discovers a spooky dead body when doing some nighttime checks.
Spoiler : Review :

Story: Not much of the story is revealed at this point, mostly being some proof of concept of certain scenes. We learn the details of the crime and as you can imagine given Skye is involved, there are train shenanigans. The writing in general is very Skye-ish, I don’t really know how to put it into words. She’s British so that might just be it.

Characters: the case takes an approach of giving us different perspectives the body discovery, investigation, and trial, which is an interesting approach I’d like to see expanded on more. The engineer and detective seem interesting enough, and of course this being a Skye case, she has got Athena casually in England with Trucy ready to do some attorneys.

Presentation: Presentation is pretty unpolished, but given I encouraged Skye to submit despite herself saying it was broken, I can’t complain. There is a unique sprite set for the engineer, and a background with a train on it. Lots of placeholders though that make me wonder what else Skye has cooking asset-wise.

Gameplay: The case is mostly investigation/gameplay forward, with little room for just sitting around talking. Body discovery is a first person investigation scene, and we get to interrogate the engineer we just played as well which is cool.

Theme Relevance: Murder on a train? Impossible! Skye would never let such sacred ground be stained in blood.
Spoiler : Overall :
PROS
Skye had the courage to submit an admittedly broken first draft with totally no real coercion
CONS
Someone died on a train!

Also I am sorry that Sponge was so impatient to end the grace period that he forced me to pester you to either submit or dropout.

The Turnabout of the Curious Incident of the Train in the Night-Time
by skyem and spoonofdestiny
Spoiler : Screenshot :

It's okay. I'm shy too. Take all the time you need...
Spoiler : Synopsis :
A train engineer is doing an inspection of a train, when they suddenly find a corpse. It's so shocking that they say "Boy, this sure is a curious incident of the train in the night-time."
Spoiler : Review :
Story: There's a few slivers of investigation scenes, and about 10 frames of a pre-trial scene. Not enough to say anything about as of now. This case is extremely unfinished.

Characters: There's an engineer and they's ile choo choo

Presentation: The placeholders have placeholders. What custom art that is there looks really good, though.

Gameplay: For now, there's a bit of simple investigation gameplay.

Theme Relevance: The impossible aspect of the person dying in the train hasn't been revealed yet, so this can't be judged for theme relevance.
Spoiler : Overall :
Another cyberbullying victim of Trybien. Can we ban this guy from judging? I can't really review anything writing-wise in this case in good faith. The custom art is pretty though :D
